Investigating Deep Phylogenetic Relationships among Cyanobacteria and Plastids by Small Subunit rRNA Sequence Analysis1 Tập 46 Số 4 - Trang 327-338 - 1999
Seán Turner, Kathleen M. Pryer, Vivian Miao, Jeffrey D. Palmer
Small subunit rRNA sequence data were generated for 27 strains of cyanobacteria
and incorporated into a phylogenetic analysis of 1,377 aligned sequence
positions from a diverse sampling of 53 cyanobacteria and 10 photosynthetic
plastids. Tree inference was carried out using a maximum likelihood method with
correction for site‐to‐site variation in evolutionary rate. Confidence in the
inferred phylo... hiện toàn bộ
Cryptosporidium hominis n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) from Homo sapiens Tập 49 Số 6 - Trang 433-440 - 2002
Una Ryan, Abbie Fall, Lucy Ward, Nawal Hijjawi, Irshad M. Sulaiman, Ronald D. Payer, Richard C. Thompson, Merle S. Olson, Altaf A. Lal, Lihua Xiao
ABSTRACT. The structure and infectivity of the oocysts of a new species of
Cryptosporidium from the feces of humans are described. Oocysts are structurally
indistinguishable from those of Cryptosporidium parvum. Oocysts of the new
species are passed fully sporulated, lack sporocysts, and measure 4.4–5.4 μm
(mean = 4.86) × 4.4–5.9 μm (mean = 5.2μm) with a length to width ratio 1.0–1.09
(mean 1.07) ... hiện toàn bộ
Cryptosporidium Species and Genotypes in HIV‐Positive Patients in Lima, Peru Tập 50 Số s1 - Trang 531-533 - 2003

ABSTRACT: Cryptosporidium parasites from a cross‐sectional study conducted in
two national hospitals in Lima, Peru were genetically characterized to deteimine
the diversity of Cryptosporidium spp. in HIV‐positive people. A total of 2,672
patients participated in this study and provided 13,937 specimens.
Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected by microscopy in 354 (13.3%) of the
patients. Analysis of... hiện toàn bộ
Mixotrophy in the Phototrophic Harmful Alga Cochlodinium polykrikoides (Dinophycean): Prey Species, the Effects of Prey Concentration, and Grazing Impact Tập 51 Số 5 - Trang 563-569 - 2004

ABSTRACTWe first reported here that the harmful alga Cochlodinium polykrikoides,
which had been previously known as an autotrophic dinoflagellate, was a
mixotrophic species. We investigated the kinds of prey species and the effects
of the prey concentration on the growth and ingestion rates of C. polykrikoides
when feeding on an unidentified cryptophyte species (Equivalent Spherical

Paramecium aureliaRevisited Tập 52 Số 1 - Trang 68-77 - 2005
Annette W. Coleman
Abstract. The speciesParamecium aureliasensu latu, containing 15 sexually
isolated subspecies (syngens), is the classic example of a sibling species
complex in the ciliates. Using DNA sequence comparison, it is now possible to
see whether this example parallels other studied sibling species complexes. We
sequenced the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the nuclear ribosomal
cistron for 13 ... hiện toàn bộ
YI‐S, a Casein‐free Medium for Axenic Cultivation of Entamoeba histolytica, Related Entamoeba, Giardia intestinalis and Trichomonas vaginalis Tập 42 Số 3 - Trang 277-278 - 1995
Leila Diamond, C Graham Clark, Carol C. Cunnick
ABSTRACT. Pancreatic digests of casein are major ingredients of media used in
the axenic cultivation of lumen‐dwelling parasitic protozoa, especially
Entamoeba, Giardia, and trichomonads. The digest used almost exclusively in the
development of these media, Medo‐Peptone (Trypticase® BBL), has not been
available since 1981. Moreover, none of dozens of similar type digests tested
since then in our l... hiện toàn bộ
Paranucleospora theridion n. gen., n. sp. (Microsporidia, Enterocytozoonidae) with a Life Cycle in the Salmon Louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis, Copepoda) and Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) Tập 57 Số 2 - Trang 95-114 - 2010
Stian Nylund, Are Nylund, K. Watanabe, Carl Erik Arnesen, Egil Karlsbakk
ABSTRACT. Paranucleospora theridion n. gen, n. sp., infecting both Atlantic
salmon (Salmo salar) and its copepod parasite Lepeophtheirus salmonis is
described. The microsporidian exhibits nuclei in diplokaryotic arrangement
during all known life‐cycle stages in salmon, but only in the merogonal stages
and early sporogonal stage in salmon lice. All developmental stages of P.
theridion are in direct... hiện toàn bộ
Phylogeny of Trichomonads Inferred from Small‐Subunit rRNA Sequences Tập 42 Số 4 - Trang 411-415 - 1995
John H. Gunderson, Gregory Hinkle, Detlev D. Leipe, Hilary G. Morrison, Shawn K. Stickel, David A. Odelson, John A. Breznak, Thomas A. Nerad, Miklós Müller, Mitchell L. Sogin
ABSTRACT. Small subunit (16S‐like) ribosomal RNA sequences were obtained from
representatives of all four families constituting the order Trichomonadida.
Comparative sequence analysis revealed that the Trichomonadida are a
monophyletic lineage and a deep branch of the eukaryotic tree. Relative to other
early divergent eukaryotic assemblages the branching pattern within the
Trichomonadida is very s... hiện toàn bộ
