R.E. Nabors-Oberg, R.S. Niaura, J.J. Sollers, J.F. Thayer
This article presents a study that examined the cardiovascular effects of a
single session of repetitive cigarette smoking to investigate the possible
development of short-term tolerance.

MRI data compression using a 3-D discrete wavelet transform Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 95-103 - 2002
W. Badawy, M. Weeks, Guoqing Zhang, M. Talley, M.A. Bayoumi
A low-power system that can be used to compress MRI data and for other medical
applications is described. The system uses a low power 3-D DWT processor based
on a centralized control unit architecture. The simulation results show the
efficiency of the wavelet processor. The prototype processor consumes 0.5 W with
total delay of 91.65 ns. The processor operates at a maximum frequency of 272
MHz. Th... hiện toàn bộ

Cloning. [Issues in ethics] Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 120-122 - 2002
J.H. Fielder
It seems ages ago (but it was only 1997) that Dolly, the sheep cloned by Ian
Wilmot in Scotland, made headlines all over the world. Using somatic cell
nuclear transfer (SCNT), in which genetic material is introduced into an egg
from which the nucleus has been removed, Dolly was a copy of the donating sheep.
The ethical discussion had already begun, even before a successful mammalian
cloning, but D... hiện toàn bộ

Những lo ngại về tính hợp lệ của các chỉ số biến thiên nhịp tim thông dụng Dịch bởi AI Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 35-40 - 2002
B.H. Friedman, M.T. Allen, I.C. Christie, A.K. Santucci

Time-frequency parameters of heart-rate variability Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 46-58 - 2002
H.G. van Steenis, Martens WLJ, J.H.M. Tulen
We have evaluated a new method to compute time-frequency parameters from
cardiovascular time series. Apart from calculating the IA and the IF,
characteristics of the oscillatory and irregular periods can be quantified that
may be relevant to further unravel the situational- and state-dependent dynamics
of homeostatic cardiovascular control processes. As a first approach, the method
was applied to ... hiện toàn bộ

The evolution of custom microarray manufacture Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 123-125 - 2002
H.R. Garner, R.P. Balog, K.J. Luebke
Given the enormous size of the genome and that there are potentially many other
types of measurements we need to do to understand it, it has become necessary to
pick and choose one's targets to measure because it is still impossible to
evaluate the entire genome all at once. What has emerged is a need to have
rapidly customizable microarrays. There are two dominant methods to accomplish
custom mic... hiện toàn bộ

Characteristics and capabilities of the hyperspectral imaging microscope Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 104-117 - 2002
M.L. Huebschman, R.A. Schultz, H.R. Garner
Single-pass multispectral imaging enables applications ranging from
whole-chromosome painting to gene mapping. We have developed a prototype
Hyperspectral Imaging Microscope (HIM) Workstation to take advantage of
multispectral imaging analysis on a single pass. We trade a full specimen image
on a single pass for a full emission spectrum on a single pass. The prototype HI
microscope collects the vi... hiện toàn bộ

Estimating respiratory frequency from autoregressive spectral analysis of heart period Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 41-45 - 2002
J.F. Thayer, J.J. Sollers, E. Ruiz-Padial, J. Vila
In this article we report the results of a pilot study and a larger
investigation that examined the relationship between respiration frequency
assessed using the traditional mercury strain gauge and using the central
frequency of the HF component derived from autoregressive spectral analysis.

Examining changes in HRV in response to varying ambient temperature Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 30-34 - 2002
J.J. Sollers, T.A. Sanford, R. Nabors-Oberg, C.A. Anderson, J.F. Thayer
The present study is designed to examine changes in HRV in response to ambient
temperature change in college-aged men and women. We hypothesize that the VLFP
(very-low-frequency power) component would be increased in the cold environment
whereas the HFP (high-frequency power) component would be reduced in the hot
environment with no differences between baseline and the cold condition.

Neurovisceral integration in cardiac and emotional regulation Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 24-29 - 2002
J.F. Thayer, G.J. Siegle
The utility of heart-rate variability (HRV) to index important aspects of neural
control of the heart has made it one of the most valuable tools for researchers
interested in health and behavior. However, most of the literature and extant
data on the central origins of HRV have been derived from animal models. As yet
little is known about the central nervous system (CNS) origins and concomitants
