Dimensional analysis of HRV in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patients
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine - Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 71-78 - 2002
R. Carvajal, J.J. Zebrowski, M. Vallverdu, R. Baranowski, L. Chojnowska, W. Poplawska, P. Caminal
The HRV signals of 16 HCM patients are analyzed. Eight of them died or had a history of aborted sudden cardiac death, forming the high-risk group. The other eight patients form the low-risk group. Stationarity analysis is applied in order to avoid nonstationarities and to reject those data from further analysis. The surrogate data method is used to test nonlinear determinism on the RR series. The evolution of custom microarray manufacture
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine - Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 123-125 - 2002
H.R. Garner, R.P. Balog, K.J. Luebke
Given the enormous size of the genome and that there are potentially many other types of measurements we need to do to understand it, it has become necessary to pick and choose one's targets to measure because it is still impossible to evaluate the entire genome all at once. What has emerged is a need to have rapidly customizable microarrays. There are two dominant methods to accomplish custom mic...... hiện toàn bộ

MRI data compression using a 3-D discrete wavelet transform
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine - Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 95-103 - 2002
W. Badawy, M. Weeks, Guoqing Zhang, M. Talley, M.A. Bayoumi
A low-power system that can be used to compress MRI data and for other medical applications is described. The system uses a low power 3-D DWT processor based on a centralized control unit architecture. The simulation results show the efficiency of the wavelet processor. The prototype processor consumes 0.5 W with total delay of 91.65 ns. The processor operates at a maximum frequency of 272 MHz. Th...... hiện toàn bộ

Examining changes in HRV in response to varying ambient temperature
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine - Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 30-34 - 2002
J.J. Sollers, T.A. Sanford, R. Nabors-Oberg, C.A. Anderson, J.F. Thayer
The present study is designed to examine changes in HRV in response to ambient temperature change in college-aged men and women. We hypothesize that the VLFP (very-low-frequency power) component would be increased in the cold environment whereas the HFP (high-frequency power) component would be reduced in the hot environment with no differences between baseline and the cold condition.

Cloning. [Issues in ethics]
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine - Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 120-122 - 2002
J.H. Fielder
It seems ages ago (but it was only 1997) that Dolly, the sheep cloned by Ian Wilmot in Scotland, made headlines all over the world. Using somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), in which genetic material is introduced into an egg from which the nucleus has been removed, Dolly was a copy of the donating sheep. The ethical discussion had already begun, even before a successful mammalian cloning, but D...... hiện toàn bộ

Estimating respiratory frequency from autoregressive spectral analysis of heart period
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine - Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 41-45 - 2002
J.F. Thayer, J.J. Sollers, E. Ruiz-Padial, J. Vila
In this article we report the results of a pilot study and a larger investigation that examined the relationship between respiration frequency assessed using the traditional mercury strain gauge and using the central frequency of the HF component derived from autoregressive spectral analysis.

The effects of controlled smoking on heart period variability
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine - Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 65-70 - 2002
R.E. Nabors-Oberg, R.S. Niaura, J.J. Sollers, J.F. Thayer
This article presents a study that examined the cardiovascular effects of a single session of repetitive cigarette smoking to investigate the possible development of short-term tolerance.

Time-frequency parameters of heart-rate variability
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine - Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 46-58 - 2002
H.G. van Steenis, Martens WLJ, J.H.M. Tulen
We have evaluated a new method to compute time-frequency parameters from cardiovascular time series. Apart from calculating the IA and the IF, characteristics of the oscillatory and irregular periods can be quantified that may be relevant to further unravel the situational- and state-dependent dynamics of homeostatic cardiovascular control processes. As a first approach, the method was applied to ...... hiện toàn bộ

Publish and perish [engineering and the law]
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine - Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 127-133 - 2002
C. Walter, E.P. Richards
Most of us are familiar with the pressures of "publish or perish." So what do you do if the journal in which you wish to publish your scientific articles tells you it won't publish your article unless you give it something extra of value? We are all familiar with the practice of "page charges" and the resulting disclaimer at the bottom of the title page identifying some research articles as paid a...... hiện toàn bộ

The effects of coronary occlusion location on the RR signal
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine - Tập 21 Số 4 - Trang 59-64 - 2002
F. Claria, M. Vallverdu, P. Caminal
We carry out the study of the energy contribution of the RR signal in the three frequency bands (LF, MF, and HF) during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Furthermore, variables based on instantaneous frequency and on group delay computed from RR signal in the three frequency bands are analyzed. All these variables are calculated by applying the Choi-Williams distribution to the RR si...... hiện toàn bộ
