Tập 117 Số 3 - Trang 442-458 - 2017
Joe F. Hair, Carole L. Hollingsworth, Adriane B. Randolph, Alain Yee‐Loong Chong
Purpose Following the call for awareness of accepted reporting practices by Ringle, Sarstedt, and Straub in 2012, the purpose of this paper is to review and analyze the use of partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) in Industrial Management & Data Systems (IMDS) and extend MIS Quarterly (MISQ) applications to include the period 2012-2014. Design/methodology/approach Review of PLS-SEM applications in information systems (IS) studies published in IMDS and MISQ for the period 2010-2014 identifying a total of 57 articles reporting the use of or commenting on PLS-SEM. Findings The results indicate an increased maturity of the IS field in using PLS-SEM for model complexity and formative measures and not just small sample sizes and non-normal data. Research limitations/implications Findings demonstrate the continued use and acceptance of PLS-SEM as an accepted research method within IS. PLS-SEM is discussed as the preferred SEM method when the research objective is prediction. Practical implications This update on PLS-SEM use and recent developments will help authors to better understand and apply the method. Researchers are encouraged to engage in complete reporting procedures. Originality/value Applications of PLS-SEM for exploratory research and theory development are increasing. IS scholars should continue to exercise sound practice by reporting reasons for using PLS-SEM and recognizing its wider applicability for research. Recommended reporting guidelines following Ringle et al. (2012) and Gefen et al. (2011) are included. Several important methodological updates are included as well.

Heetae Yang, Hwansoo Lee, Hangjung Zo
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a comprehensive research model that can explain potential customers’ behavioral intentions to adopt and use smart home services. Design/methodology/approach This study proposes and validates a new theoretical model that extends the theory of planned behavior. Partial least squares analysis is employed to test the research model and corresponding hypotheses on data collected from 216 survey samples. Findings Mobility, security/privacy risk, and trust in the service provider are important factors affecting the adoption of smart home services. Practical implications To increase potential users’ adoption rate, service providers should focus on developing mobility-related services that enable people to access smart home services while on the move using mobile devices via control and monitoring functions. Originality/value This study is the first empirical attempt to examine user acceptance of smart home services, as most of the prior literature has concerned technical features.
HTMT2–an improved criterion for assessing discriminant validity in structural equation modeling
Tập 121 Số 12 - Trang 2637-2650 - 2021
Ellen Roemer, Florian Schuberth, Jörg Henseler
PurposeOne popular method to assess discriminant validity in structural equation modeling is the heterotrait-monotrait ratio of correlations (HTMT). However, the HTMT assumes tau-equivalent measurement models, which are unlikely to hold for most empirical studies. To relax this assumption, the authors modify the original HTMT and introduce a new consistent measure for congeneric measurement models: the HTMT2.Design/methodology/approachThe HTMT2 is designed in analogy to the HTMT but relies on the geometric mean instead of the arithmetic mean. A Monte Carlo simulation compares the performance of the HTMT and the HTMT2. In the simulation, several design factors are varied such as loading patterns, sample sizes and inter-construct correlations in order to compare the estimation bias of the two criteria.FindingsThe HTMT2 provides less biased estimations of the correlations among the latent variables compared to the HTMT, in particular if indicators loading patterns are heterogeneous. Consequently, the HTMT2 should be preferred over the HTMT to assess discriminant validity in case of congeneric measurement models.Research limitations/implicationsHowever, the HTMT2 can only be determined if all correlations between involved observable variables are positive.Originality/valueThis paper introduces the HTMT2 as an improved version of the traditional HTMT. Compared to other approaches assessing discriminant validity, the HTMT2 provides two advantages: (1) the ease of its computation, since HTMT2 is only based on the indicator correlations, and (2) the relaxed assumption of tau-equivalence. The authors highly recommend the HTMT2 criterion over the traditional HTMT for assessing discriminant validity in empirical studies.
Do blockchain and circular economy practices improve post COVID-19 supply chains? A resource-based and resource dependence perspective
Tập 121 Số 2 - Trang 333-363 - 2020
Santosh Nandi, Joseph Sarkis, Aref A. Hervani, Marilyn M. Helms
PurposeUsing the resource-based and the resource dependence theoretical approaches of the firm, the paper explores firm responses to supply chain disruptions during COVID-19. The paper explores how firms develop localization, agility and digitization (L-A-D) capabilities by applying (or not applying) their critical circular economy (CE) and blockchain technology (BCT)-related resources and capabilities that they either already possess or acquire from external agents.Design/methodology/approachAn abductive approach, applying exploratory qualitative research was conducted over a sample of 24 firms. The sample represented different industries to study their critical BCT and CE resources and capabilities and the L-A-D capabilities. Firm resources and capabilities were classified using the technology, organization and environment (TOE) framework.FindingsFindings show significant patterns on adoption levels of the blockchain-enabled circular economy system (BCES) and L-A-D capability development. The greater the BCES adoption capabilities, the greater the L-A-D capabilities. Organizational size and industry both influence the relationship between BCES and L-A-D. Accordingly, research propositions and a research framework are proposed.Research limitations/implicationsGiven the limited sample size, the generalizability of the findings is limited. Our findings extend supply chain resiliency research. A series of propositions provide opportunities for future research. The resource-based view and resource-dependency theories are useful frameworks to better understanding the relationship between firm resources and supply chain resilience.Practical implicationsThe results and discussion of this study serve as useful guidance for practitioners to create CE and BCT resources and capabilities for improving supply chain resiliency.Social implicationsThe study shows the socio-economic and socio-environmental importance of BCES in the COVID-19 or similar crises.Originality/valueThe study is one of the initial attempts that highlights the possibilities of BCES across multiple industries and their value during pandemics and disruptions.
Using lean principles to streamline the quotation process: a case study
- 2002
Conan M.Buzby, ArthurGerstenfeld, Lindsay E.Voss, Amy Z.Zeng
The quotation process tightly links the manufacturer and its suppliers and customers on a supply chain. An excellent record of successful quotes not only benefits trading partners, but also positions the manufacturer on the market in terms of its responsiveness, customer service, efficiency, and competitive pricing. In the existing literature, lean principles are generally applied to manufacturing only, this paper relies on a case study to show the application of lean manufacturing principles to the administrative function of the quotation process. In addition, the case demonstrates that electronic solutions are the best remedies for streamlining the quotation process to reduce the total cycle time – the basis for providing competitive prices and excellent customer service.

Purpose Stimulated by trends in group purchasing and online social communities, consumers are changing their shopping behavior and increasingly turning to websites for their shopping needs. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how website quality influences shopping websites to create value for the customer and promote loyalty among customers, as well as moderating effects of online shopping experience. Design/methodology/approach This study collected data from 275 respondents for testing against the proposed research model by means of the partial least squares (PLS) path modeling. ADANCO software was used to assess the reliability and validity of the measurement model, conduct an analysis of the goodness of model fit for the overall model, and test the hypotheses through structural modeling. Findings Empirical results demonstrate that system quality and electronic service quality (e-service quality) have a significant positive effect on the perceived value of consumer/seller relationship; the perceived value of the consumer/seller relationship has a significant positive effect on online loyalty; online shopping experience does not exert a moderating effect on the relationship between website quality and the perceived value of consumer/seller relationship. Originality/value This study applied the PLS path modeling approach using ADANCO variance-based structural equation modeling software to verify that website quality plays an important role in distinguishing a brand from other brands in e-tailing, making it an essential factor of a shopping website’s business success. This study further verified that the amount of previous online shopping experience a consumer has does not interfere with the positive influence that website quality exerts on the perceived value of the consumer/seller relationship. The above indicates that it is imperative for website managers to adopt online shopping experience of consumers as a market segmentation variable so as to enhance website quality, increase the perceived value of consumer-seller relationships, and win consumer loyalty.

Purpose This purpose of this paper is to evaluate Millennials’ intention to use service mobile apps and assess gender as a moderator. Design/methodology/approach An extended technology acceptance model framework that includes information quality and self-efficacy guides this research. PLS-SEM is used to evaluate the data and test the hypotheses. Findings The study reveals that information quality, self-efficacy, perceived ease of use and usefulness, and attitude influence Millennials’ intentions to use service mobile apps. Additionally, gender is found to partially moderate the results. Practical implications Service companies that rely on mobile apps to deliver services ought to consider the disparities among the Millennial generation, increasing the likelihood that Millennial customers will adopt service mobile apps and that they receive acceptable customer experiences. Originality/value This paper examines the factors influencing adoption and use of service mobile apps among Millennials and examines gender as a moderator. Additionally, guidelines for service mobile app design are included.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to find the optimal power structure that drives green practices in the supply chain and coordinate the costs and benefits of green practices in supply chain under different power structures.Design/methodology/approachThis paper developed a supply chain of one supplier and one manufacturer, in which the supplier and the manufacturer are responsible for the “greening” of products. Then, the game theory modeling method is used to explore the influence of different power structures on green practices in the supply chain. Finally, the authors developed a green cost-sharing contract made by the leader; regarding optimal supply chain profits and green performance, the proposed contracts and the non-coordination situation are compared and tested by a numerical simulation.FindingsThe increase of the green practice difficulty of any member in the supply chain will not only reduce the greenness of products at that stage but will also reduce the green investment of the supply chain partner. Becoming a channel leader does not necessarily mean being more profitable than being a follower, and when the green practice difficulty of the leader is less than a certain threshold, ceding dominant power to the follower may benefit both sides. A green cost-sharing contract made by the leader is not necessarily beneficial to all enterprises.Originality/valueThis paper helps to better understand the role of the power relation in realizing the industry's green goals and helps decision-makers to achieve win-win cooperation by adjusting power relations and optimizing green cost-sharing contracts.
Minimizing the risk of seaport operations efficiency reduction affected by vessel arrival delay
Tập 118 Số 7 - Trang 1498-1509 - 2018
Zhengxu Wang, Chonghui Guo
Purpose In seaport industries, vessel arrival delay is inevitable because of numerous factors, e.g. weather, delay due to the previous stop, etc. The period of delay can be as short at 15 min of as long as a few days. This causes disruption to the planned sea operation operations, and more importantly, to the resources utilization. In traditional berth allocation and quay crane assignment problems (BA-QCA), the risk of vessel arrival delay has not been considered. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to employ a proactive planning approach by taking into consideration the vessel arrival delay into the optimization of BA-QCA problems. Design/methodology/approach In the existing BA-QCA problems, vessel arrival time is usually deterministic. In order to capture the uncertainties of arrival delay, this paper models the arrival time as a probability distribution function. Moreover, this paper proposes to model the delay risk by using the period between the expected arrival time and the expected waiting time of a vessel. Lastly, the authors propose a new modified genetic algorithm and a new quay crane assignment heuristic to maximize the schedule reliability of BA-QCA. Findings A number of numerical experiments are conducted. First of all, the optimization quality of the proposed algorithm is compared with the traditional genetic algorithm for verifying the correctness of the optimization approach. Then, the impact of vessel arrival delay is tested in different scenarios. The results demonstrate that the impact of vessel arrival delay can be minimized, especially in the situations of high vessel to potential berth ratio. Research limitations/implications The proposed vessel arrival modeling approach and the BA and QCA approach can increase the operations efficiency of seaports. These approaches can increase the resource utilization by reducing the effect of vessel arrival delay. In other words, this can improve the throughput of seaport terminals. Originality/value This paper proposes to minimize the delay risk based on the conditional probability of the vessel completion time based on the previous vessel at the assigned berth. This modeling approach is new in literature.
