An explanation for the energetic ions observed in the PetaWatt experiments is
presented. In solid target experiments with focused intensities exceeding
1020 W/cm2, high-energy electron generation, hard bremsstrahlung, and energetic

The propagation of high-power short-pulse laser beams over considerable
distances in air is studied both experimentally and via numerical simulations.
Filaments are formed after 5–10 m and their propagation over distances in excess
of 200 m is reported for the first time. The lateral dimensions of the filaments

Operation regimes, plasma parameters, and applications of the low-frequency
(∼500 kHz) inductively coupled plasma (ICP) sources with a planar external coil
