Swine as Models in Biomedical Research and Toxicology Testing
Tập 49 Số 2 - Trang 344-356 - 2012
M. Michael Swindle, Andy Makin, Alan J. Herron, Fred J. Clubb, Kendall S. Frazier
Swine are considered to be one of the major animal species used in translational research, surgical models, and procedural training and are increasingly being used as an alternative to the dog or monkey as the choice of nonrodent species in preclinical toxicologic testing of pharmaceuticals. There are unique advantages to the use of swine in this setting given that they share with humans ...... hiện toàn bộ
Comparison of the Pathogenicity of Two US Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus Isolates with that of the Lelystad Virus
Tập 32 Số 6 - Trang 648-660 - 1995
Patrick G. Halbur, Prem S. Paul, M. L. Frey, John G. Landgraf, K. A. Eernisse, Xiang‐Jin Meng, Melissa A. Lum, John J. Andrews, J. A. Rathje
The Lelystad virus or one of two US isolates (VR2385, VR2431) of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus were given intranasally to 25 4-week-old cesarian-derived colostrum-deprived pigs. Pigs from these groups were necropsied at 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 21, or 28 days postinoculation. The Lelystad virus and VR2431 induced mild transient pyrexia, dyspnea, and tachypnea. VR2385 i...... hiện toàn bộ
Classification and Grading of Canine Mammary Tumors
Tập 48 Số 1 - Trang 117-131 - 2011
Michael H. Goldschmidt, L. Peña, Roberta Rasotto, Valentina Zappulli
Mammary neoplasms are the most common neoplasm in female dogs. Two histologic classification systems for canine mammary tumors and dysplasias have been published: the first in 1974 and a modification in 1999. This article provides a brief overview of the two histologic classification systems. Since the publication of the second system, several new histologic subtypes of canine mammary neo...... hiện toàn bộ
Myodegeneration With Fibrosis and Regeneration in the Pectoralis Major Muscle of Broilers
Tập 51 Số 3 - Trang 619-623 - 2014
Hanna-Kaisa Sihvo, Kaisa Immonen, Eero Puolanne
A myopathy affecting the pectoralis major muscle of the commercial broiler has emerged creating remarkable economic losses as well as a potential welfare problem of the birds. We here describe the macroscopic and histologic lesions of this myopathy within 10 pectoralis major muscles of 5- to 6-week-old broilers in Finland. Following macroscopic evaluation and palpation of the muscles, a t...... hiện toàn bộ
MicroRNAs
Tập 51 Số 4 - Trang 759-774 - 2014
M. Bhaskaran, Mahesh Mohan
The discovery of microRNAs (miRNAs) in 1993 followed by developments and discoveries in small RNA biology have redefined the biological landscape by significantly altering the longstanding dogmas that defined gene regulation. These small RNAs play a significant role in modulation of an array of physiological and pathological processes ranging from embryonic development to neoplastic progr...... hiện toàn bộ
Pathology of Fatal West Nile Virus Infections in Native and Exotic Birds during the 1999 Outbreak in New York City, New York
Tập 37 Số 3 - Trang 208-224 - 2000

West Nile fever caused fatal disease in humans, horses, and birds in the northeastern United States during 1999. We studied birds from two wildlife facilities in New York City, New York, that died or were euthanatized and were suspected to have West Nile virus infections. Using standard histologic and ultrastructural methods, virus isolation, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization an...... hiện toàn bộ
Role of M Cells and Macrophages in the Entrance of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis into Domes of Ileal Peyer's Patches in Calves
Tập 25 Số 2 - Trang 131-137 - 1988
Eiichi Momotani, Diana L. Whipple, A B Thiermann, Norman F. Cheville
Ligated ileal loops of calves were inoculated with live and heat-killed Mycobacterium paratuberculosis and were examined by light and electron microscopy. At 5 hours after inoculation, acid-fast bacilli were in subepithelial macrophages, but not in M cells covering domes. At 20 hours, more than 50 acid-fast bacilli per cross section were in subepithelial macrophages in domes. Both living ...... hiện toàn bộ
Astrocytes: Form, Functions, and Roles in Disease
Tập 31 Số 2 - Trang 145-167 - 1994
Donald L. Montgomery
Astrocytes, once relegated to a mere supportive role in the central nervous system, are now recognized as a heterogeneous class of cells with many important and diverse functions. Major astrocyte functions can be grouped into three categories: guidance and support of neuronal migration during development, maintenance of the neural microenvironment, and modulation of immune reactions by se...... hiện toàn bộ
Development, Anatomy, Histology, Lymphatic Drainage, Clinical Features, and Cell Differentiation Markers of Canine Mammary Gland Neoplasms
Tập 48 Số 1 - Trang 85-97 - 2011
Karin U. Sørenmo, Roberta Rasotto, Valentina Zappulli, Michael H. Goldschmidt
Mammary neoplasms are the most common neoplasm in female dogs. This article describes the embryologic development, normal anatomy, and histology of the canine mammary gland from the onset of first estrous and the changes that occur in the mammary gland during the estrus cycle. The clinical features of canine mammary gland tumors and their relation to prognosis are discussed, including age...... hiện toàn bộ
Comparison of the Antigen Distribution of Two US Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus Isolates with that of the Lelystad Virus
Tập 33 Số 2 - Trang 159-170 - 1996
Patrick G. Halbur, Prem S. Paul, M. L. Frey, John G. Landgraf, K. A. Eernisse, Xiang‐Jin Meng, John J. Andrews, Melissa A. Lum, J. A. Rathje
One hundred 4-week-old cesarean-derived colostrum-deprived pigs were inoculated with one of two different US porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) isolates (VR2385, VR2431) or the European Lelystad virus to detect and compare the location and amount of virus antigen. Interstitial pneumonia, myocarditis, lymphadenopathy, and encephalitis were consistently seen in all ...... hiện toàn bộ
