Does government ideology influence budget composition? Empirical evidence from OECD countries
Springer Science and Business Media LLC - Tập 12 - Trang 101-134 - 2010
Niklas Potrafke
This paper examines whether government ideology has influenced the allocation of public expenditures in OECD countries. I analyze two datasets that report different expenditure categories and cover the time periods 1970–1997 and 1990–2006, respectively. The results suggest that government ideology has had a rather weak influence on the composition of governments’ budgets. Leftist governments, howe...... hiện toàn bộ
The social costs of crime: the erosion of trust between citizens and public institutions
Springer Science and Business Media LLC - Tập 22 - Trang 93-117 - 2021
Angelo Cozzubo, Elard Amaya, Juan Cueto
More than half the population considers lack of security a significant national problem in Peru, and one in four citizens has reported being the victim of a crime. However, empirical evidence remains scarce and does not factor in the social cost of crime. To this end, this paper seeks to contribute by measuring the short-term and long-term impacts of crime victimization on trust in public institut...... hiện toàn bộ

Craig A. Depken, Adam J. Hoffer, Abdul H. Kidwai
This paper describes the outcome of an artefactual field experiment of group discrimination using sports fans. The behavior of individuals whose identity is deeply tied to a larger group or popular institution is politically important, particularly when it comes to crafting public policy. Sports fans provide a unique opportunity to study individuals who openly identify their in-group and rival gro...... hiện toàn bộ

Tax rate changes are some of the most significant and far-reaching decisions a government can take. In this paper we investigate the various fiscal and political factors that influence a government’s statutory tax rate change choices. We employ a multinomial logit model to empirically investigate the likelihood of changes to personal income tax, corporate income tax, and provincial sales tax rates...... hiện toàn bộ
“Rulers ruled by women”: an economic analysis of the rise and fall of women’s rights in ancient Sparta
Springer Science and Business Media LLC - Tập 10 - Trang 221-245 - 2009
Robert K. Fleck, F. Andrew Hanssen
Until modern times, most women possessed relatively few formal rights. The women of ancient Sparta were a striking exception. Although they could not vote, Spartan women reportedly owned 40 percent of Sparta’s agricultural land, and enjoyed other rights that were equally extraordinary. We offer a simple economic explanation for the Spartan anomaly. The defining moment for Sparta was its conquest o...... hiện toàn bộ
On the cost-benefit of the regionalisation of the National Health Service
Springer Science and Business Media LLC - Tập 1 - Trang 213-232 - 2000
Alessandro Petretto
In this paper we analyse in formal terms the desirability of the regionalisation of a National Health Service. The policy consists of a devolution process, i.e. the increase in the health services provision to be decided by a region and financed by an increase in its revenues. The change is a marginal one, as it regards the part of supply of the health services exceeding a minimum standard, which...... hiện toàn bộ

The impact of public pension board of trustee composition on state bond ratings
Springer Science and Business Media LLC - Tập 19 - Trang 51-73 - 2018
John A. Dove, Courtney A. Collins, Daniel J. Smith
The declining financial health of public pension systems is increasingly becoming a budgetary concern for many state and local governments. While the academic literature has identified several factors behind the growth in unfunded state and local public pension liabilities, there is mixed evidence on how the composition of a pension system’s board of trustees affects a pension’s financial health. ...... hiện toàn bộ
