Learning pitch patterns in lexical identification by native English-speaking adults
Tập 28 Số 4 - Trang 565-585 - 2007
Patrick C. M. Wong, Tyler K. Perrachione
The current study investigates the learning of nonnative suprasegmental patterns for word identification. Native English-speaking adults learned to use suprasegmentals (pitch patterns) to identify a vocabulary of six English pseudosyllables superimposed with three pitch patterns (18 words). Successful learning of the vocabulary necessarily entailed learning to use pitch patterns in words. ...... hiện toàn bộ
The influence of orthography on readers' conceptualization of the phonemic structure of words
Tập 1 Số 4 - Trang 371-385 - 1980
Linnea C. Ehri, Lee S. Wilce
ABSTRACTThis study was designed to determine whether children's conceptualization of the component sounds in words is influenced by their knowledge of the words' spellings. For example, the spelling of pitch may lead learners to discover the phonetic element [t] in its pronunciation and to conceptualize this as a separate phoneme, whereas...... hiện toàn bộ
A redefinition of the syndrome of Broca's aphasia: Implications for a neuropsychological model of language
Tập 1 Số 3 - Trang 225-278 - 1980
Rita Sloan Berndt, Alfonso Caramazza
ABSTRACTA neuropsychological theory is offered to account for the syndrome of Broca's aphasia. A critical review of the literature, with emphasis on recent research, provides the basis for a redefinition of the syndrome that considerably broadens its classical description. The argument is advanced that the focus of neuropsychological explanation should be on theore...... hiện toàn bộ
What's in a word? Morphological awareness and vocabulary knowledge in three languages
Tập 29 Số 3 - Trang 437-462 - 2008
Catherine McBride‐Chang, Twila Tardif, Jeung‐Ryeul Cho, Hua Shu, Paul Fletcher, Stephanie F. Stokes, Amy Wong, K. K. Leung
ABSTRACTUnderstanding how words are created is potentially a key component to being able to learn and understand new vocabulary words. However, research on morphological awareness is relatively rare. In this study, over 660 preschool-aged children from three language groups (Cantonese, Mandarin, and Korean speakers) in which compounding morphology is highly prevale...... hiện toàn bộ
Grammatical errors in specific language impairment: Competence or performance limitations?
Tập 15 Số 4 - Trang 507-550 - 1994
Dorothy Bishop
ABSTRACTSpeech samples from twelve 8- to 12-year-old children with specific language impairment (SLI) were analyzed. The feature deficit hypothesis maintains that SLI children may produce morphological markers (e.g., plural -s) correctly, but they do not appreciate their role in marking grammatical features. Rather, they treat them as meaningless phonological varia...... hiện toàn bộ
Examination of phonological working memory in specifically language-impaired children
Tập 16 Số 4 - Trang 355-378 - 1995
James W. Montgomery
AbstractThe present study examined the phonological memory capacity, rate of articulation, phonological-encoding, and perceptual-processing abilities of 13 well-defined, specifically language-impaired (SLI) children and 13 younger, language-matched normal (NL) children. The results of a nonsense word repetition task showed that SLI children repeated significantly f...... hiện toàn bộ
The contributions of phonology, orthography, and morphology in Chinese–English biliteracy acquisition
Tập 30 Số 2 - Trang 291-314 - 2009
Min Wang, Yang Chen, Chenxi Cheng
ABSTRACTThis study investigated the concurrent contributions of phonology, orthography, and morphology to biliteracy acquisition in 78 Grade 1 Chinese–English bilingual children. Conceptually comparable measures in English and Chinese tapping phonological, orthographic, and morphological awareness were administered. Word reading skill in English and Chinese was als...... hiện toàn bộ
Development of morphological awareness and vocabulary knowledge in Spanish-speaking language minority learners: A parallel process latent growth curve model
Tập 33 Số 1 - Trang 23-54 - 2012
Michael J. Kieffer, Nonie K. Lesaux
ABSTRACTDespite acknowledgement of the limited English vocabularies demonstrated by many language minority (LM) learners, few studies have identified skills that relate to variation in vocabulary growth in this population. This study investigated the concurrent development of morphological awareness (i.e., students’ understanding of complex words as combinations of...... hiện toàn bộ
The role of discourse pragmatics in the acquisition of subjects in Italian
Tập 26 Số 3 - Trang 437-462 - 2005
Ludovica Serratrice
This longitudinal study investigates the distribution of null and overt subjects in the spontaneous production of six Italian-speaking children between the ages of 1 year, 7 months and 3 years, 3 months. Like their peers acquiring other Romance null-subject languages, the children in this sample produced more overt subjects as their mean length of utterance in words (MLUW) increased. Prono...... hiện toàn bộ
Indicators of linguistic competence in the peer group conversational behavior of mildly retarded adults
Tập 8 Số 1 - Trang 19-32 - 1987
Sheldon Rosenberg, Leonard Abbeduto
ABSTRACTSamples of the communicative behavior of a group of higher-level mentally retarded adults engaged in conversation with peers were examined for indications of mature linguistic competence, specifically, grammatical morpheme and complex sentence use. The findings confirmed the expectation that the eventual level of mastery of these aspects of linguistic compe...... hiện toàn bộ
