Garnet pyroxenite xenoliths and pyropic megacrysts in Scottish alkali basaltsScottish Journal of Geology - Tập 39 Số 2 - Trang 169-184 - 2003
B. G. J. Upton, Peder Aspen, R. W. Hinton
Synopsis Pyropic garnet occurs within garnet pyroxenite xenoliths and as
discrete crystals in Carboniferous–Permian alkali basaltic tuffs and hypabyssal
intrusions. Eight localities are now known from the Midland Valley together with
another in the NW Highlands. The xenoliths are inferred to have been derived
from minor pyroxenitic intercalations in spinel lherzolite within the
lithospheric mantle... hiện toàn bộ
Torridonian alluvium and quicksandsScottish Journal of Geology - Tập 5 Số 4 - Trang 328-346 - 1969
Richard C. Selley
Synopsis This paper provides new data on Torridonian alluvium on Raasay,
confirming its braided origin and refining its environmental interpretation.
Fining-upwards cycles appear to be absent. This may be an important criterion in
distinguishing deposits of braided rivers from those due to meandering rivers. A
quantitative study reveals a close correlation between grain size and
sedimentary struct... hiện toàn bộ
The Geikie igneous centre, west of Lewis: its structure and influence on Tertiary geologyScottish Journal of Geology - Tập 25 Số 3 - Trang 339-352 - 1989
D. Evans, Douglas A. Abraham, K. Hitchen
Synopsis The Geikie igneous centre is identified from a large positive gravity
anomaly to the west of Lewis. The anomaly is satisfied by a simple two cylinder
model with a maximum diameter of 26 km. The centre is covered by Palaeocene
basalts which are domed and radially disposed around it. The centre occurs near
the apex of a topographic bulge on the slope west of Scotland which overlies
thinned ... hiện toàn bộ
Photographic evidence for slope-current activity, Hebrides Slope, NE Atlantic OceanScottish Journal of Geology - Tập 31 Số 2 - Trang 107-115 - 1995
John Howe, J.D. Humphery
Synopsis Evidence from sea-bed photographs and current-meter data from the
Hebrides Slope, indicates that there is a slope-current flowing northward along
the bathymetric contours in water depths of 500–1100 m. Structures identified
from photographs include: asymmetric linguoid ripples, scours, crag-and-tail
structures and current-induced smoothing of the seabed in fine- to
medium-grained contouri... hiện toàn bộ
A local deep-water sediment failure on the NW slope of the UKScottish Journal of Geology - Tập 27 Số 2 - Trang 107-111 - 1991
P. Strachan, D. Evans
Synopsis An example is described, from seismic evidence, of a local deep-water
sediment failure on the slope to the west of the Isle of Lewis, an area which
otherwise appears to be generally stable. The feature is about 4 km long in the
downslope direction and lies above an escarpment at an approximate water depth
of 1100 m. The loss of layering on the reflection profile, and the existence of
infi... hiện toàn bộ
Magmatism of the British Tertiary Volcanic ProvinceScottish Journal of Geology - Tập 18 Số 1 - Trang 49-107 - 1982
R. N. Thompson
Synopsis This review concentrates on those aspects of research into the
magmatism of the British Tertiary Volcanic Province (BTVP) which have seen rapid
accumulation of data and changes of views during the last few years. There seems
to be general agreement at present amongst those who have made detailed
geochemical studies of the problem that the pervasive hydrothermal metamorphism
which affects ... hiện toàn bộ
