AbstractA common misconception about sampling in qualitative research is that
numbers are unimportant in ensuring the adequacy of a sampling strategy. Yet,
simple sizes may be too small to support claims of having achieved either
informational redundancy or theoretical saturation, or too large to permit the
deep, case‐oriented analysis that is the raison‐d'etre of qualitative inquiry.

AbstractNurse researchers typically provide evidence of content validity for
instruments by computing a content validity index (CVI), based on experts'
ratings of item relevance. We compared the CVI to alternative indexes and
concluded that the widely‐used CVI has advantages with regard to ease of
computation, understandability, focus on agreement of relevance rather than
agreement per se, focus o... hiện toàn bộ
Abstract“Whatever Happened to Qualitative Description?” (Sandelowski, 2000) was
written to critique the prevailing tendency in qualitative health research to
claim the use of methods that were not actually used and to clarify a
methodological approach rarely identified as a distinctive method. The article
has generated several misconceptions, most notably that qualitative description
requires no i... hiện toàn bộ
AbstractThere is little published guidance concerning how large a pilot study
should be. General guidelines, for example using 10% of the sample required for
a full study, may be inadequate for aims such as assessment of the adequacy of
instrumentation or providing statistical estimates for a larger study. This
article illustrates how confidence intervals constructed around a desired or

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of
the Quality of Life Index (QLI) (Ferrans & Powers, 1985). The sample consisted
of 349 patients selected randomly from the adult, in‐unit hemodialysis patient
population of Illinois. Factor analysis was used to examine the underlying
factor structure. A four‐factor solution best fit the data, indicating that
there were ... hiện toàn bộ
AbstractInitial psychometric evaluation of an instrument to measure perceived
benefits of exercise and perceived barriers to exercise was based on the
responses of 650 adults and included item analysis, factor analysis, and
reliability measures. Factor analysis yielded nine factors, five benefits and
four barriers, which explained 64.9% of the variance in the 43‐item instrument.

AbstractAn objective scale for measuring discomfort in noncommunicative patients
with advanced Alzheimer's disease was empirically generated from the
perspectives of nursing staff practicing on special care Alzheimer units and was
judged to have content validity. On the basis of a pilot test, the discomfort
scale was reduced to nine items. Quantifiable scoring procedures and a rater
training progr... hiện toàn bộ
AbstractAttentional fatigue usually follows intense use of mental effort and is
manifested as a decreased capacity to concentrate, that is, to direct attention.
The purpose of this study was to examine the capacity to direct attention in
persons with cancer during the initial phase of illness. The sample consisted of
32 women without cognitive or affective disorders who underwent surgery for
local... hiện toàn bộ
AbstractWe compared the prevalence of depression in the postpartum period and
its relationship with perceived stress and social support in first‐time mothers
and fathers. A cross‐sectional study was conducted in mainland China with a
convenience sample of 130 pairs of parents. Measures taken at 6–8 weeks after
delivery included the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, the Perceived Stress
Scale, ... hiện toàn bộ
