2/spl times/2 all-optical exchange-bypass switch

We demonstrate an optically addressable 2/spl times/2 exchange-bypass switch operating with 10 Gbps data packets. Switching is achieved in an optical amplifier gate and the performance of the device is independent of packet length and content.

Metro network with reconfigurable optical add-drop module

We simulated a metro amplification node with reconfigurable optical add-drop module (ROADM) and a 6-node metro ring based on the amplifier. Network performances with three types of ROADM are evaluated.

Polarization mode dispersion and its mitigation in optical networks

PMD effects impose severe penalties on older fiber plants at 10Gb/s and on virtually all plants at 40Gb/s. Summary form only given. We designed and fabricated the hybrid integrated CMOS-VCSEL multiple chip modules. The VCSEL operate at 850nm wavelength. A typical VCSEL has a threshold current of 4 mA, and quantum efficiency of 0.3 mW/mA. Operating at 8 mA modulation current, the VCSEL 3-dB modulation bandwidth was measured more than 5 GHz.

Microcavity effects on spontaneous emission factor in 1.55/spl mu/m VCSELs

The ratio of spontaneous emission in the resonant mode of a laser to the total spontaneous emission is commonly known as the spontaneous emission factor. This factor is used in the rate equation analysis to characterise the spectral and dynamic behaviour of semiconductor lasers. In this present study, we combine the material temperature effects with temperature dependent cavity effects.
