Challenges for optical PMD compensation - Trang TuN1-TuN1
E. Corbel
This paper reviews the principle of optical polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) compensation (OPMDC). It lays the emphasis on the challenges that OPMDC faces in order to improve its implementation in a DWDM system.

Polarization properties of self-pulsating VCSELs - Trang TuP6-TuP6
A. Scire, J. Mulet, C.R. Mirasso, M. San Miguel
We consider VCSELs operating in the fundamental transverse mode. Our theoretical framework combines the light polarization dynamics which is described by the so-called spin flip model with a description for the absorber region. We demonstrated that polarization self-pulsations in VCSELs are possible under certain operation conditions. As a result of analytical and numerical analysis of our model, ...... hiện toàn bộ

173 picosecond wavelength switching of four WDM channels using an OTDM channel selector - Trang WF4-WF4
Bing C Wang, V. Baby, Lei Xu, I. Glesk, P.R. Prucnal
Summary form only given. We demonstrated fast wavelength switching using an OTDM channel selector and a TOAD, with an average latency of 173ps and a maximum latency of 320ps. This system has potential applications in a low latency wavelength converter or wavelength router. By replacing the local source with our system, a wavelength converter can change the wavelength at its output within a few bit...... hiện toàn bộ

GaAs-based tunnel junctions for micro-cavity devices - Trang MH5-MH5
C. Moller, J. Bottcher, M. Protsch, H. Kunzel
The development of high quality GaAs-based tunnel junctions grown by MBE was systematically studied. Fabricated Si/Be-doped GaAs tunnel junctions show record low junction resistance. The enhancement of lateral current spreading is demonstrated.

Polarization mode dispersion and its mitigation in optical networks - Trang TuN2-TuN2
K.B. Rochford, G.R. Gray, D.L. Veasey
PMD effects impose severe penalties on older fiber plants at 10Gb/s and on virtually all plants at 40Gb/s. An optical compensator can mitigate these penalties, allowing error-free performance without severely limiting the regenerator distances. A repeatable, calibrated PMD emulator allows thorough testing of a polarisation mode dispersion compensator (PMDC) and the calculation of outage probabilit...... hiện toàn bộ

Performance analysis and control strategy for pixelated dynamic gain equalizers - Trang MD2-MD2
V.A. Karasyuk, W.J. Tomlinson
Dynamic network reconfigurations change gain profiles of optical amplifiers employed for signal amplification. Fixed gain flattening filters cannot compensate for these changes. Dynamic gain equalizers (DGE) can substantially improve optic link performance and enable longer links without re-generation or higher transmission rates on the existing links. In a pixelated DGE, the input light is spectr...... hiện toàn bộ

Red VCSELs: More than 4 mW output power at 650 nm - Trang MF1-MF1
A. Knigge, M. Zorn, M. Weyers, G. Trankle
Due to the small bandgap discontinuities and the low thermal conductivity in the AlGaInP/AlGaAs material system the output power of red VCSELs is drastically reduced if the laser wavelength decreases and/or the operation temperature increases. Recently, our group reported the record cw output power of 3.2 mW for 650 nm oxide-confined VCSELs. For high output power and good temperature stability the...... hiện toàn bộ
