H. Sotobayashi, W. Chujo, T. Ozeki
Hierarchical hybrid OTDM/WDM network is proposed for the future core-network. As its enabling technologies, C- and L-wavelength-band generation, OTDM-WDM mutual multiplexing format conversions, and ultrafast OTDM wavelength-band conversions are reported.

The active region is given by a 5 nm In/sub 0.10/Ga/sub 0.90/As quantum well in the center of the GaAs cavity. Microcavities with lateral sizes on the order a few microns were fabricated by electron beam lithography and etching of the layered structures, The use of cavities to enhance and suppress optical emission rates by modifying the photon density of states has been a central interest of resea... hiện toàn bộ

Suppressing amplifier transients in lightwave systems
- Trang WE3-WE3
R. Monnard, Hak Kyu Lee, A. Srivastava
The implementation of the new features such as dynamic wavelength provisioning and automated reconfiguration can lead to optical power transients in a conventional gain-controlled EDFA, which is usually operated under saturation. These signal transients can compromise the flexibility of network architecture and impact overall system performance. Should a network be reconfigured or a component fail... hiện toàn bộ

Challenges for optical PMD compensation
- Trang TuN1-TuN1

This paper reviews the principle of optical polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) compensation (OPMDC). It lays the emphasis on the challenges that OPMDC faces in order to improve its implementation in a DWDM system.

Polarization mode dispersion and its mitigation in optical networks
- Trang TuN2-TuN2
K.B. Rochford, G.R. Gray, D.L. Veasey
PMD effects impose severe penalties on older fiber plants at 10Gb/s and on virtually all plants at 40Gb/s. An optical compensator can mitigate these penalties, allowing error-free performance without severely limiting the regenerator distances. A repeatable, calibrated PMD emulator allows thorough testing of a polarisation mode dispersion compensator (PMDC) and the calculation of outage probabilit... hiện toàn bộ

Error-free transmission under all polarization conditions in /spl ges/10 Gbit/s ULH agile optical networks is achieved through dynamic control and through margining for low-probability events. Simulation and experimental results are presented that help to derive bounds on speed and magnitude of polarization-induced impairments.

Tunable dispersion and dispersion slope compensators for 10 Gb/s using all-pass multicavity etalons

D.J. Moss, M. Lamont, S. McLaughlin, G. Randall, P. Colbourne, S. Kiran, C.A. Hulse
We propose and demonstrate a novel approach to multi-channel tunable dispersion compensation based on multicavity etalons that can compensate all channels throughout the C or L band with either 50 GHz or 100 GHz channel spacings for 10 Gb/s applications. We demonstrate very low group delay ripple, large tuning range, as well as dispersion slope compensation for LEAF and TrueWave RS fiber across th... hiện toàn bộ

Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers laterally confined by 2-dimensional photonic crystals
- Trang TuP2-TuP2
N. Yokouchi, A. Danner, K.D. Choquette
Summary form only given. Recent increases in data traffic have motivated research into vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) penetrating into single mode regimes as well as multimode fiber links. For these applications, a VCSEL with single mode operation has been demanded. We investigate a VCSEL structure laterally confined by a 2D-photonic crystal using the effective index model.
