Arsenic Contamination of Groundwater: A Review of Sources, Prevalence, Health Risks, and Strategies for Mitigation
Tập 2014 - Trang 1-18 - 2014
Shiv Shankar, Uma Shanker, Shikha Shikha
Arsenic contamination of groundwater in different parts of the world is an outcome of natural and/or anthropogenic sources, leading to adverse effects on human health and ecosystem. Millions of people from different countries are heavily dependent on groundwater containing elevated level of As for drinking purposes. As contamination of groundwater, poses a serious risk to human health. Exc...... hiện toàn bộ
Impact of Endophytic Microorganisms on Plants, Environment and Humans
Tập 2014 - Trang 1-11 - 2014
Dhanya N. Nair, S. Padmavathy
Endophytes are microorganisms (bacteria or fungi or actinomycetes) that dwell within robust plant tissues by having a symbiotic association. They are ubiquitously associated with almost all plants studied till date. Some commonly found endophytes are those belonging to the generaEnterobacter sp.,Colletotrichum sp.,Phomopsis...... hiện toàn bộ
Evaluating Medicinal Plants for Anticancer Activity
Tập 2014 - Trang 1-12 - 2014
Elisha Solowey, Michal Lichtenstein, Sarah Sallon, Helena Maaria Paavilainen, Elaine Solowey, Haya Lorberboum‐Galski
Plants have been used for medical purposes since the beginning of human history and are the basis of modern medicine. Most chemotherapeutic drugs for cancer treatment are molecules identified and isolated from plants or their synthetic derivatives. Our hypothesis was that whole plant extracts selected according to ethnobotanical sources of historical use might contain multiple molecules wi...... hiện toàn bộ
Antibiotic, Pesticide, and Microbial Contaminants of Honey: Human Health Hazards
Tập 2012 - Trang 1-9 - 2012
Naoual El Menyiy, Khelod Salom, Ahmed Alghamdi, Mohammad Javed Ansari
Agricultural contamination with pesticides and antibiotics is a challenging problem that needs to be fully addressed. Bee products, such as honey, are widely consumed as food and medicine and their contamination may carry serious health hazards. Honey and other bee products are polluted by pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria and radioactive materials. Pesticide residues cause genetic mutati...... hiện toàn bộ
Uranium Speciation and Bioavailability in Aquatic Systems: An Overview
Tập 2 - Trang 707-729 - 2002
Scott J. Markich
The speciation of uranium (U) in relation to its bioavailability is reviewed for surface waters (fresh- and seawater) and their sediments. A summary of available analytical and modeling techniques for determining U speciation is also presented. U(VI) is the major form of U in oxic surface waters, while U(IV) is the major form in anoxic waters. The bioavailability of U (i.e., its ability to...... hiện toàn bộ
Minimum Information About a Microarray Experiment (MIAME) – Successes, Failures, Challenges
Tập 9 - Trang 420-423 - 2009
Alvis Brāzma
The Minimum Information About a Microarray Experiment (known as MIAME) guidelines describe information that needs to be provided to enable the interpretation of the results of a microarray-based experiment unambiguously. The MIAME guidelines were developed by the Microarray Gene Expression Data (MGED) Society. Since the MIAME position paper was published in 2001, it has been cited in the s...... hiện toàn bộ
Origin, Fate, and Function of Epicardium-Derived Cells (EPDCs) in Normal and Abnormal Cardiac Development
Tập 7 - Trang 1777-1798 - 2007
Heleen Lie‐Venema, Nynke M. S. van den Akker, Noortje A.M. Bax, Elizabeth M. Winter, Saskia Maas, Tuija Kekarainen, Rob C. Hoeben, Marco C. DeRuiter, Robert E. Poelmann, Adriana C. Gittenberger‐de Groot
During heart development, cells of the primary and secondary heart field give rise to the myocardial component of the heart. The neural crest and epicardium provide the heart with a considerable amount of nonmyocardial cells that are indispensable for correct heart development. During the past 2 decades, the importance of epicardium-derived cells (EPDCs) in heart formation became increasin...... hiện toàn bộ
The Future of Butyric Acid in Industry
Tập 2012 - Trang 1-10 - 2012
Mohammed Dwidar, Jae Yeon Park, Robert J. Mitchell, Byoung‐In Sang
In this paper, the different applications of butyric acid and its current and future production status are highlighted, with a particular emphasis on the biofuels industry. As such, this paper discusses different issues regarding butyric acid fermentations and provides suggestions for future improvements and their approaches.
Stand-Alone Lateral Interbody Fusion for the Treatment of Low-Grade Degenerative Spondylolisthesis
Tập 2012 - Trang 1-7 - 2012
Luís Marchi, Nitamar Abdala, Leonardo Oliveira, Rodrigo Amaral, Etevaldo Coutinho, Luiz Pimenta
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the stand-alone lateral interbody fusion as a minimally invasive option for the treatment of low-grade degenerative spondylolisthesis with a minimum 24-month followup. Prospective nonrandomized observational single-center study. 52 consecutive patients (67.6±10 y/o; 73.1% female;27.4±3.4 BMI) with single-level grade I/II single-level degenerative spondylolisthesis without significant spine instability were included. Fusion procedures were performed as retroperitoneal lateral transpsoas interbody fusions without screw supplementation. The procedures were performed in average 73.2 minutes and with less than 50cc blood loss. VAS and Oswestry scores showed lasting improvements in clinical outcomes (60% and 54.5% change, resp.). The vertebral slippage was reduced in 90.4% of cases from mean values of 15.1% preoperatively to 7.4% at 6-week followup ( hiện toàn bộ
Transforming Growth Factor-Beta and Matrix Metalloproteinases: Functional Interactions in Tumor Stroma-Infiltrating Myeloid Cells
Tập 2014 - Trang 1-14 - 2014
Jelena Krstić, Juan F. Santibáñez
Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) is a pleiotropic factor with several different roles in health and disease. In tumorigenesis, it may act as a protumorigenic factor and have a profound impact on the regulation of the immune system response. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family that comprises more than 25 members, which have recently been proposed ...... hiện toàn bộ
