Ralph Hamann and Paul Kapelus argue that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)-related narratives and practices can be fruitfully assessed with reference to accountability and fairness as key criteria. Brief case studies of mining in South Africa and Zambia suggest that there are still important gaps between mining companies’ CSR activities, on the one hand, and accountability and fairness, on the other. The conclusion is that companies’ CSR-related claims, and particularly the reference to a business case for voluntary initiatives, need to be treated with caution. CSR is not necessarily or only greenwash, but there is a need to engage business critically towards more sincere versions of CSR.

The UN system is at a pivotal point in time. With its mandate to pursue justice for people and planet and address inequalities and insecurities at all levels, it must pivot unequivocally to public interest. Norms, standards and guidelines are needed to govern the interactions of the United Nations with the corporate sector. Priority must be given to establish an adequate intergovernmental framework and UN institutional capacity for assessing risk and ensuring impartial monitoring and oversight.

Food systems in Mexico have been transformed over the last decades, ushering in a period characterized by a double burden of over and under nutrition, high prevalence of non-communicable diseases, economic deprivation and income inequality, and the destruction of livelihoods, the environment and human rights. This article puts forth recommendations, based on the case of Mexico, for reforming food systems, and indicates that civil society organizations and social movements have a crucial role to play in developing and implementing these changes and serving to counterbalance the influence of commercial interests.

Farmer argue that understanding the reasons why countries may not attain the Millennium Development Goals becomes a predictable litany of the barriers and deficiencies that exist within any profoundly poor country. They suggest a more productive approach to achieving the goals would be to identify and to challenge the continued use of obstructive and damaging international policy recommendations including user fees, social sector spending limits, high burdens of debt and the continued reliance upon the neo-liberal model.

They argue that in this time of unprecedented crisis, the UN in order to play a renewed and vigorous role needs women as much as women have historically needed the UN.

There is a growing scientific consensus on climate change and the need for adaptation, yet an impasse on realizing development for the rural and urban poor. Emily Boyd et al. suggest that a resilience lens may assist development policy to consider pathways towards more successful livelihood transformations in the face of climate change. We recognize that there are also limitations to this approach.
