Abstract: We have used an anhepatic dog model to demonstrate the efficacy of a bioartificial liver assist device. Six dogs underwent total hepatectomy. Three received only medical care (controls) while the remainder were connected to an extracorporeal liver assist device (ELAD). The control dogs failed to regain consciousness after anesthesia although all lived 4–5 h postoperativlely. Plasma ammon... hiện toàn bộ
The Hepatix Extracorporeal Liver Assist Device: Initial Clinical Experience
Artificial Organs - Tập 18 Số 5 - Trang 390-396 - 1994
Norman Sussman, Gardar T. Gislason, Carol Conlin, James H. Kelly
Abstract: Eleven patients were treated with the Hepatix extracorporeal liver assist device (ELAD) between June 1991 and August 1993. The first 2 patients were treated according to Food and Drug Administration guidelines (“Emergency Use of Unapproved Medical Devices,” October 22, 1985), and the remaining 9 were treated according to an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE). The goal of the study wa... hiện toàn bộ
Higher Renal Replacement Therapy Dose Delivery Influences on Drug Therapy
Artificial Organs - Tập 27 Số 9 - Trang 808-814 - 2003
Bruce A. Mueller, Deborah A. Pasko, Kevin M. Sowinski
Abstract: Higher doses of renal replacement therapy have profound effects on pharmacotherapy, yet little research has been conducted in this area. High‐volume renal replacement therapies influence both the pharmacokinetic and the pharmacodynamic profiles of all drugs administered to these critically ill patients. Intermittent high‐dose “hybrid” hemodialysis therapies remove drugs to a much differe... hiện toàn bộ
Comparison of Sustained Hemodiafiltration With Continuous Venovenous Hemodiafiltration for the Treatment of Critically Ill Patients With Acute Kidney Injury

AbstractDespite improvements in medical care, the mortality of critically ill patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) who require renal replacement therapy (RRT) remains high. We describe a new approach, sustained hemodiafiltration, to treat patients who suffered from acute kidney injury and were admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). In our study, 60 critically ill patients with AKI who require... hiện toàn bộ
Hemodiafiltration: A New Alternative To Hemofiltration And Conventional Hemodialysis*
Artificial Organs - Tập 2 Số 2 - Trang 150-153 - 1978
H. W. Leber, V. Wizemann, G Goubeaud, P Rawer, G Schütterle
ABSTRACTA new dialysis method, termed hemodiafiltration, is proposed. The procedure consists of the combination of hemofiltration and conventional hemodialysis using high flux membranes with a transmembrane pressure (TMP) of 300–500 mmHg and a dialysate flow of 900 ml/min. Due to the combination of convective mass transfer and diffusion, the clearance values of both small and larger molecules are ... hiện toàn bộ
New Method to Calculate Creatinine Generation Rate Using Pre‐ and Postdialysis Creatinine Concentra tions
Artificial Organs - Tập 21 Số 8 - Trang 864-872 - 1997

Abstract: The creatinine (Cr) generation rate reflects the muscle mass, a possible indicator of protein nutritional status. Thus, in this study, we developed equations for calculating the Cr generation rate. Depner and Daugirdas recently developed a method for determining the protein catabolic rate (PCR) from the pre‐ and postdialysis blood urea nitrogen concentrations. We modified their method to... hiện toàn bộ

AbstractThe estrogenic endocrine‐disrupting substance bisphenol A (BPA) is extensively used as a starting material for a variety of consumer plastic products including dialyzer materials. The present study was performed to explore plasma BPA levels in patients with impaired renal function and to investigate if dialyzers differing in elutable BPA influence plasma levels in patients on maintenance h... hiện toàn bộ
Effects of the External Qigong on Symptoms of Arteriosclerotic Obstruction in the Lower Extremities Evaluated by Modern Medical Technology
Artificial Organs - Tập 22 Số 8 - Trang 707-710 - 1998
T Agishi
The modern treatment strategy for arteriosclerotic obstruction (ASO), which symptomatically appears primarily in the lower extremities, consists of drug and interventional therapy. Reported herein are the effects of external qigong, which has been a traditional therapeutic technique in the oriental countries for a long time and is known to bring warmness in the body, evaluated by modern medical te... hiện toàn bộ
Structure and Dosimetric Analysis of Biodegradable Glasses for Prostate Cancer Treatment
Artificial Organs - Tập 27 Số 5 - Trang 432-436 - 2003
Wanderley dos Santos Roberto, Marivalda M. Pereira, Tarcísio Passos Ribeiro de Campos
Abstract: This work analyzes SiO2 and SiO2‐CaO glasses incorporated with samarium atoms produced by sol‐gel synthesis. The goal is to provide biocompatible and biodegradable radioactive seeds as an alternative to be used in brachytherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer. The chemical and physical characteristics of the obtained glasses were analyzed by energy dispersive x‐ray spectroscopy, x‐r... hiện toàn bộ
Civilian Uses of Hemoglobin‐based Oxygen Carriers
Artificial Organs - Tập 28 Số 9 - Trang 795-799 - 2004
A. Gerson Greenburg, Hae Won Kim
Abstract:  This article briefly discusses a few key issues related to transfusion, the concept of hemoglobin‐based red blood cell substitutes (HBOCs), and some parameters useful in evaluating the current properties of solutions. Potential uses of HBOCs in civilian applications are identified and listed. Use of HBOCs as a hemodiluent for intraoperative autologous blood donation (IAD) is a particula... hiện toàn bộ
