Hệ thống Chuyển giao và Tích lũy Tín chỉ Châu Âu (ECTS) dựa vào sự hiểu biết định lượng và tích lũy về thời gian, điều này ngày càng ảnh hưởng đến các thực hành học thuật và khái niệm về việc học trong giáo dục đại học (GDĐH). Bằng ví dụ từ một cải cách chính sách gần đây ở Đan Mạch, bài báo khám phá mối liên hệ giữa ECTS, các thực hành thể chế mới và những ý tưởng thay đổi về việc học và thành tựu học thuật trong GDĐH. Đầu tiên, bài báo chỉ ra rằng ECTS gắn liền với một khái niệm về việc học và thành tựu học thuật như một thực hành tuyến tính và có trật tự, điều này được xác định bởi đồng hồ. Thứ hai, nó minh họa cách mà các thể chế ở Đan Mạch đã sử dụng ECTS như một khung để quản lý vi mô thời gian của sinh viên bằng cách quy định các hoạt động mà sinh viên nên thực hiện theo từng giờ để đáp ứng yêu cầu của một tuần học 42 giờ. Thứ ba, nó kêu gọi thảo luận về hình ảnh chức năng của việc học và thành tựu học thuật như một quá trình rõ ràng và đồng nghĩa, có tính hợp lý, có thể dự đoán và hữu hạn, mà ECTS áp đặt lên GDĐH.
