Theory of the linearity of retention index with column temperature. Its versatility and importance in gas chromatography

A linear equation between retention index and column temperature has been derived. This theory has been verified from a large collection of data, covering nine solute-solvent polarity combinations and about a dozen stationary liquids. Gas-solid and liquid-liquid chromatography are also claimed to follow the retention index temperature linearity. This simple theory constitutes an important advance on the extensive research currently directed on retention indices for qualitative GC. Contrary to belief, the temperature coefficient of retention index has been shown to reflect significantly the finer structural features of solutes and stationary liquids. In this theory there are potentially several parameters for the unambiguous identification of chromatographic peaks, for studying the role of temperature on solute-solvent interactions and for obtaining a new correlational approach between isothermal and programmed temperature retention indices.
