Các hồ sơ xét nghiệm dịch não tủy (CSF) trong khoảng thời gian ba năm kết thúc vào ngày 30 tháng 9 năm 1991 đã được nghiên cứu theo cách hồi cứu. Từ 3.161 xét nghiệm, 66 tác nhân gây bệnh đã được phát hiện, trong đó 64 tác nhân đến từ nuôi cấy trên đĩa thạch thông thường. Nuôi cấy môi trường làm giàu đã cho ra 219 chủng, trong đó 217 có khả năng là chất ô nhiễm. Chỉ có hai tác nhân gây bệnh được phân lập qua phương pháp nuôi cấy làm giàu, và trong cả hai mẫu, số lượng bạch cầu trong dịch não tủy đều bất thường. Việc sử dụng nuôi cấy môi trường làm giàu nên được giới hạn cho các mẫu CSF có số lượng bạch cầu bất thường và/hoặc nhuộm Gram.
