Bệnh tâm thần ảnh hưởng đến một số lượng lớn người trên thế giới, gây suy giảm nghiêm trọng chất lượng cuộc sống của họ và dẫn đến những chi phí kinh tế xã hội cao cho các hệ thống chăm sóc sức khỏe và xã hội. Mục tiêu của chúng tôi là ước tính tác động kinh tế xã hội của bệnh tâm thần tại Tây Ban Nha trong năm 2002, bao gồm tài nguyên chăm sóc sức khỏe, chăm sóc không chính thức và mất năng suất lao động. Phương pháp dựa trên tỷ lệ mắc bệnh đã được sử dụng để ước tính chi phí y tế trực tiếp, chi phí không y tế trực tiếp và mất năng suất lao động. Tổng chi phí của bệnh tâm thần được ước tính là 7.019 triệu euro. Chi phí y tế trực tiếp chiếm 39,6% tổng chi phí và 7,3% tổng chi phí chăm sóc sức khỏe công cộng tại Tây Ban Nha. Chi phí chăm sóc không chính thức chiếm 17,7% tổng chi phí. Tổn thất năng suất lao động chiếm 42,7% tổng chi phí. Kết luận, chi phí của bệnh tâm thần tại Tây Ban Nha gây ra tác động kinh tế đáng kể từ góc độ xã hội.
