Penland's beardtongue, một loài thực vật quý hiếm đặc hữu của Cao nguyên Colorado, thể hiện một hệ thống sinh sản hỗn hợp. Các cây có khả năng tự thụ phấn một phần nhưng tạo ra nhiều trái hơn khi thụ phấn chéo thay vì tự thụ phấn. Sản lượng trái được tăng cường đáng kể bởi các loài thụ phấn. Tuy nhiên, trong hai năm nghiên cứu, không có chỉ dấu nào cho thấy việc tạo ra trái bị giới hạn bởi việc thăm viếng không đủ của các loài thụ phấn. Hiệu quả của các loài thụ phấn được đánh giá bằng cách tương quan hành vi của ong tại những bông hoa với phân tích phấn hoa mà ong mang trên cơ thể.
