AbstractThe scanty data available on the effects of undernutrition during gestation and lactation upon neural development in man are reviewed briefly. This review is followed by a description of the various techniques that have been employed for the experimental undernutrition of laboratory animals. Then a detailed review is given of the effects of dietary deprivation during gestation, lactation, after weaning, and in adulthood upon the development of the nervous system and its different parts in a variety of mammalian species, with special emphasis on the rat. Finally, in a programmatic statement, the developmental phases during which undernutrition can be produced experimentally are related to critical stages or vulnerable periods of brain development.
