Con đường khởi đầu của một tư vấn viên hoặc nhà trị liệu mới có thể rất gian nan. Bài viết này dựa trên tài liệu thực nghiệm và lý thuyết về sự phát triển của các nhà tư vấn và nhà trị liệu để mô tả bảy yếu tố căng thẳng của người mới hành nghề. Sự không rõ ràng trong công việc chuyên nghiệp là yếu tố chủ yếu thúc đẩy sự căng thẳng của người mới vào nghề.
