Trong một loạt 1850 trường hợp được phẫu thuật do thoát vị đĩa đệm thắt lưng, 130 trường hợp đã trải qua phẫu thuật lại do triệu chứng dai dẳng hoặc tái phát. Tỷ lệ thành công của phẫu thuật lại đạt 62%. Tiên lượng của phẫu thuật lại không liên quan đến triệu chứng và dấu hiệu lâm sàng đặc biệt mà chỉ liên quan đến phát hiện trong phẫu thuật. Các trường hợp thoát vị ở các mức độ khác nhau và tái phát thoát vị đĩa đệm thắt lưng cho kết quả tốt nhất (xuất sắc ở 98% và 54% tương ứng), nhưng chỉ các hình thành sẹo cho kết quả kém hơn nhiều (chỉ 38% đạt kết quả xuất sắc). Các phát hiện từ chụp cắt lớp vi tính (CT) ít đáng tin cậy hơn trong việc phân biệt giữa thoát vị đĩa đệm và xơ hóa so với chụp cộng hưởng từ (MR). Do đó, MR là phương pháp chẩn đoán được ưa chuộng trong những trường hợp này, và chỉ các hình thành sẹo nên được coi là chống chỉ định cho phẫu thuật lại.
