Ít nghiên cứu nào ở Nigeria điều tra gánh nặng của việc chăm sóc người cao tuổi mắc bệnh tâm thần. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là xem xét tình trạng bệnh lý tâm thần và gánh nặng chăm sóc trong số những người chăm sóc bệnh nhân ngoại trú của một phòng khám tâm lý lão khoa. Gánh nặng chăm sóc được đánh giá bằng phỏng vấn Zarit. Một bảng hỏi cũng được sử dụng để thu thập các biến sociodemographic và chăm sóc của người chăm sóc trong khi tình trạng sức khỏe tâm lý được đánh giá bằng Bảng Hỏi Sức Khỏe Chung (GHQ). Tổng cộng, 52,3% người chăm sóc có gánh nặng chăm sóc cao. Gánh nặng chăm sóc cao có liên quan đến khó khăn tài chính (χ2 = 9,37; df = 1; p = 0,002; OR = 3,1; 95% CI = 1,50–6,4), hạn chế hoạt động xã hội của người chăm sóc (χ2 = 4,87; df = 1; p = 0,027; OR = 2,4; 95% CI = 1,09–5,27), thiếu hỗ trợ từ người thân (χ2 = 6,85; df = 1; p = 0,009; OR = 6,3; 95% CI = 1,35–29,6), các vấn đề sức khỏe thể chất (χ2 = 10,52; df = 1; p = 0,001; OR = 4,7; 95% CI = 1,75–12,7), và tình trạng bệnh lý tâm thần (χ2 = 4,05; df = 1; p = 0,044; OR = 2,62; 95% CI = 1,00–6,85). Tình trạng bệnh lý tâm thần được dự đoán bởi các vấn đề sức khỏe thể chất (OR = 3,0; 95% CI = 1,1–8,1), khó khăn tài chính (OR = 17,2; 95% CI = 3,8–77,5), và mất việc (OR = 5,3; 95% CI = 2,0–13,8).
