Trong quá trình phát triển của bệnh viêm màng não do Escherichia coli K1, sự tương tác giữa protein xâm nhập E. coli IbeA và protein bề mặt trên tế bào nội mạch vi não của người (HBMEC) là cần thiết cho quá trình xâm nhập và tín hiệu trung gian IbeA. Trong nghiên cứu này, một protein liên kết với IbeA được xác định là yếu tố splicing liên kết với protein polypyrimidine tract-binding (PTB).
