Non-Linear Deformation and Failure Behavior of Carbon/Glass Hybrid Laminates

An incremental analysis predicting the nonlinear stress-strain relations of laminated composites has been developed. Stress increments corresponding to small increments in the uniaxial tensile or compressive strain are obtained by the laminate theory, in which the anisotropy of fibers and the elastic interaction among fibers have been taken into account. Nonlinear shear stress-strain relations of the constituent laminae are also considered by extending the approach of a preceding paper by the authors. The calculation procedure is modified, in this paper, to take into account the finite strain deformation and the changes of the fiber orientation angles at large deformation. The failure of each lamina is assessed by the maximum stress criterion. The calculated tensile and compressive stress-strain rela tions are compared with experimental results of the carbon/glass hybrid fiber rein forced-filament wound pipes; the reduction in stiffness of the constituent laminae after their failure is investigated. The present analytical method enables us to predict the con stitutive behavior of hybrid composites for uniaxial strain in the range of — 2 % to 3% .
