PurposeThis paper aims to review current progress towards the development of the next generation grids for science and industry with particular reference to European endeavours. Reviews of projects and initiatives in biocybernetics, biometrics and innovative research and development are given.Design/methodology/approachA general review and survey of selected research and development topics.FindingsIllustrates the multi‐ and trans‐disciplinary natures of studies in cybernetics, systems, and management science with a view to further research and development activity.Practical implicationsThe choice of reviews provides awareness of the current trends in these areas.Originality/valueThe reviews are selected from a global database and give a studied assessment of current research and development.
