Trong nhiều thập kỷ qua, các glucocorticoid (GC) tự nhiên và tổng hợp đã trở thành một trong những nhóm thuốc điều biến miễn dịch được kê đơn phổ biến nhất. Hoạt động ức chế miễn dịch và kháng viêm vượt trội của chúng, cùng với hiệu quả chi phí, khiến những hợp chất này trở thành lựa chọn điều trị chủ yếu cho phần lớn các bệnh tự miễn và viêm nhiễm, mặc dù có nhiều tác dụng phụ nghiêm trọng thường đi kèm với liệu pháp GC. thụ thể glucocorticoid (GR) được kích hoạt, truyền tải thông tin tín hiệu của các steroid này tới bộ máy phiên mã, tham gia vào nhiều con đường cuối cùng để ức chế phản ứng tự miễn. Trong số đó, quá trình apoptosis do GR điều chỉnh của nhiều loại tế bào có nguồn gốc từ tế bào máu và sự ức chế biểu hiện gene cytokine tiền viêm đã được mô tả như là cơ chế chính chịu trách nhiệm cho hoạt động kháng viêm của GC.
