Tầm quan trọng của định hướng thị trường như một khái niệm cốt lõi trong tổ chức, cũng như những thảo luận gần đây về những đóng góp và thiếu sót của nó, cho thấy đã đến lúc đánh giá khối lượng lớn và ngày càng mở rộng của nghiên cứu liên quan đến khái niệm này. Nghiên cứu của chúng tôi áp dụng phương pháp định tính hệ thống để đánh giá các nghiên cứu hiện có về định hướng thị trường, xác định các vấn đề, mô hình và nghịch lý trong tài liệu. Cụ thể, chúng tôi cung cấp một sự tích hợp các nghiên cứu thực nghiệm đang phát triển về định hướng thị trường, dựa trên một tổng hợp kỹ lưỡng các bài báo được xuất bản trong hơn 25 năm qua. Bằng cách tổng hợp các nhánh nghiên cứu khác nhau đã hướng dẫn sự tích lũy tri thức về định hướng thị trường, chúng tôi có thể xác định những khoảng trống lý thuyết lớn và sự thiếu sót trong tài liệu. Chúng tôi cũng thấy rằng mặc dù nghiên cứu về định hướng thị trường đã có những bước tiến đáng kể qua các năm, nhưng vẫn còn nhiều công việc cần phải được thực hiện vì còn nhiều khoảng trống cần được giải quyết trong các cuộc điều tra tương lai.
