Một bệnh nhân nam 42 tuổi đã trải qua phẫu thuật cắt cụt dưới đầu gối do bệnh Buerger cách đây 9 và 14 năm, cần phẫu thuật khẩn cấp do thiếu máu ruột gây ra bởi tổn thương tắc nghẽn động mạch ở mạc treo. Phẫu thuật đã cắt bỏ manh tràng và phần gần của đại tràng lên, và ghi nhận sự dày thành ruột nghiêm trọng và dính sợi nặng. Chụp mạch sau phẫu thuật cho thấy các tắc nghẽn ở động mạch mạc treo trên và động mạch chậu ngoài bên phải. Mẫu cắt bỏ cho thấy hoại tử mô niêm ở manh tràng và các loét hình tròn tại van Bauhin và ở đại tràng lên. Dưới kính hiển vi, các mạch máu nhỏ trong mạc treo bị tắc nghẽn do huyết khối đã được tổ chức và tái thông với kiến trúc mạch máu được bảo tồn.
