Nước ngầm là nguồn tài nguyên nước quan trọng tại khu vực Helwan, không chỉ phục vụ cho nhu cầu uống và nông nghiệp, mà còn vì nhiều nguồn suối khoáng nổi tiếng bắt nguồn từ tầng chứa nước cacbonat nứt nẻ của khu vực này. Khu vực có mật độ dân cư dày đặc với nhiều hoạt động công nghiệp, điều này có thể gây ra rủi ro cho nguồn nước ngầm và nước bề mặt. Chất lượng nước ngầm và nước bề mặt đã được điều tra như một cơ sở cho những nghiên cứu trong tương lai. Kết quả cho thấy hóa lý nước rất biến đổi. Các giá trị cao của clorua, sunphat, độ cứng và khoáng hóa đáng kể được phát hiện dưới các khu vực công nghiệp và đô thị có mật độ cao. Nội dung nitrat cao trong nước ngầm ghi nhận ở phần phía nam của khu vực nghiên cứu có thể là do quá trình tưới tiêu và thấm nước thải từ trạm xử lý nước thải. Sự hiện diện của đá phiến và đất sét xen kẽ trong tầng chứa nước đá vôi nứt và hang hốc thúc đẩy các phản ứng trao đổi và quá trình hòa tan. Loại nước ngầm chủ yếu là natri, sunphat, clorua phản ánh mức độ khoáng hóa cao hơn so với nước bề mặt. Các kết quả cũng cho thấy rằng nước trong khu vực nghiên cứu (trừ nước sông Nile) không phù hợp để uống, nhưng có thể được sử dụng cho mục đích tưới tiêu và công nghiệp với một số hạn chế.
