Tranh chấp thương mại đầu tiên được giải quyết bởi Tổ chức Thương mại Thế giới (WTO) theo thỏa thuận về an toàn thực phẩm và kiểm dịch thực vật liên quan đến sự không đồng thuận giữa Cộng đồng Châu Âu và Hoa Kỳ về lệnh cấm nhập khẩu thịt và sản phẩm từ thịt có nguồn gốc từ gia súc đã được tiêm hormone với mục đích thúc đẩy tăng trưởng.
