Kể từ khi W. B. Gallie giới thiệu khái niệm về các khái niệm bị tranh cãi cơ bản (ECCs) vào năm 1956, các học giả khoa học xã hội ngày càng sử dụng khung phân tích này để nghiên cứu các khái niệm chính gây ra 'những tranh cãi vô tận' từ những người sử dụng khác nhau.
