Herseninfarcten op volwassen leeftijd worden vaak gekenmerkt door neurologische klachten die plotseling beginnen, terwijl de symptomen na weken of maanden geleidelijk weer verminderen. Beschadigingen die omstreeks de geboorte ontstaan, blijven daarentegen soms onopgemerkt en kunnen pas na maanden tot symptomen aanleiding geven. In andere gevallen waarbij met moderne beeldvormende technieken wel morfologische beschadigingen werden aangetoond, treden soms in het geheel geen afwijkingen op. De vraag is nu welke eigenschappen van het volwassen respectievelijk het jonge brein deze verschillen kunnen verklaren.
