Tính di truyền của mật độ khoáng xương thể tích (BMD) xương xốp được xác định bằng chụp cắt lớp vi tính định lượng (QCT) chưa được báo cáo trước đó. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là điều tra tính di truyền của BMD được xác định bởi QCT và DXA ở 124 phụ nữ và 120 nam giới (tuổi từ 39–83, chỉ số khối cơ thể (BMI) từ 17–75, 84% mắc bệnh đái tháo đường tuýp 2) từ 101 gia đình (232 cặp anh chị em) trong Nghiên cứu Tâm mạch Đái tháo đường. Kết quả cho thấy BMD thể tích có ước lượng tính di truyền (h2) là 0.73 (SE = 0.15, P < 0.0001) tại cột sống thắt lưng và 0.71 (SE = 0.15, P < 0.0001) tại cột sống ngực. Ước lượng tính di truyền của BMD diện tích là 0.56 cho cột sống PA, 0.43 cho hông tổng, 0.43 cho cổ xương đùi, 0.45 cho xương quay xa, 0.42 cho xương quay giữa, và 0.52 cho toàn thân (tất cả P < 0.01). Sau khi điều chỉnh cho mối tương quan gia đình bằng phương trình ước lượng tổng quát, BMD thể tích có mối liên hệ nghịch với tuổi (r = −0.52, P < 0.0001) và thời gian mắc bệnh đái tháo đường (r = −0.24, P < 0.01) và có mối liên hệ thuận với trọng lượng cơ thể (r = 0.25, P < 0.01).
