Bệnh nhân mắc chứng thuyên tắc tĩnh mạch (VTE) có nguy cơ phát triển cả biến chứng ngắn hạn và dài hạn có thể ảnh hưởng đáng kể đến khả năng chức năng và chất lượng cuộc sống của họ. Bệnh nhân mắc chứng huyết khối tĩnh mạch sâu (DVT) thường phát triển VTE tái phát hoặc hội chứng sau huyết khối, trong khi bệnh nhân mắc chứng thuyên tắc phổi (PE) có thể phát triển các triệu chứng lâu dài và các hạn chế chức năng kéo dài trên một phổ rộng, dẫn đến tăng huyết áp động mạch phổi mạn tính hoàn toàn.
