Cấy ghép tim hiện nay là phương pháp điều trị lựa chọn cho bệnh nhân mắc bệnh tim giai đoạn cuối với tỷ lệ sống sót trung và dài hạn tốt có thể dự đoán. Những kết quả khả quan đã dẫn đến một số phát triển mới trong những năm gần đây: mở rộng sự lựa chọn người nhận, cải thiện liệu pháp ức chế miễn dịch, giới thiệu chẩn đoán thải loại không xâm lấn, sử dụng hệ thống hỗ trợ tuần hoàn cơ học để cầu nối cho bệnh nhân bị suy tim rõ rệt cho đến khi cấy ghép, mở rộng tiêu chí lựa chọn cho trái tim hiến tặng và nâng cao hiểu biết về các vấn đề lâu dài của trái tim đã được cấy ghép. Một quy trình điều trị hậu phẫu chuẩn hóa và an toàn hiện cho phép một mức độ phục hồi cao và tỷ lệ mắc bệnh thấp cho bệnh nhân sau cấy ghép tim.
