Nhận dạng mẫu cho phép khai thác thông tin có sẵn trong các tập dữ liệu lớn một cách tự động. Nhiều nhà khoa học thừa nhận thực tế này nhưng lại gặp khó khăn trong việc học cách sử dụng các phương pháp nhận dạng mẫu. Thực tế, có rất nhiều phương pháp có sẵn và đối với những người mới bắt đầu, việc lựa chọn trở nên cực kỳ khó khăn. Vì lý do này, bài báo bắt đầu bằng cách giải thích các mô hình được sử dụng trong nhận dạng mẫu. Tiếp theo là cuộc thảo luận phản biện về những ưu điểm và nhược điểm của các phương pháp cùng với việc lựa chọn các phương pháp ưa thích.
