Nghiên cứu này nhằm lấp đầy một khoảng trống lớn trong tài liệu liên quan đến các doanh nghiệp nhỏ ở các quốc gia đang phát triển, cụ thể là liên quan đến việc phát triển các mô hình để giải thích tốt hơn hiệu suất kinh tế và môi trường như một kết quả của việc tuân thủ môi trường, từ đó tiến đến một lời giải thích về hành vi bền vững của các doanh nghiệp này. Dữ liệu từ 186 doanh nghiệp thủ công gốm sứ nằm ở ba bang Mexico (Oaxaca, Puebla và Tlaxcala) cho thấy rằng việc tuân thủ môi trường ảnh hưởng đáng kể đến hiệu suất kinh tế và môi trường, với vai trò trung gian của đổi mới môi trường, xác nhận giả thuyết Porter trong bối cảnh các doanh nghiệp nhỏ ở một nền kinh tế đang nổi.
