Smith (1981) đã phát hiện rằng câu tiếng Anh cụ thể được nhận biết tốt hơn so với câu trừu tượng và hiệu ứng cụ thể này chỉ mạnh mẽ khi câu cụ thể cũng đồng thời mang nghĩa khẳng định, nhưng hiệu ứng này lại chuyển sang hướng ngược lại khi câu cụ thể mang nghĩa phủ định.
