Việc phân loại giống khoai tây dựa trên các đặc điểm hình thái rất tốn công sức và bị ảnh hưởng bởi môi trường, trong khi các dấu hiệu phân tử hiện tại thường tốn kém hoặc mất nhiều thời gian để phát triển hoặc áp dụng.
