Sự gián đoạn có thể làm biến đổi sâu sắc cấu trúc của các cộng đồng tự nhiên. Tuy nhiên, khái niệm "gián đoạn" của các nhà sinh thái học vi khuẩn thường lệch khỏi thực tiễn thông thường.
