Nồng độ Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb và Zn có thể chiết xuất bằng axit đã được xác định trong các lớp trầm tích từ kệ nội Virginia, cũng như từ các kênh vận chuyển trong hạ lưu Chesapeake Bay và hệ thống cảng Hampton Roads, Virginia.
