Eight commercial heparin preparations were examined by the method of Born &
Cross. All preparations induced aggregation of washed human platelets in the
presence of calcium, probably by inducing release of platelet ADP. The
aggregating potency varied considerably from brand to brand.
The Value of Preoperative Haemostatic Screening

The value of preoperative haemostatic screening tests in prediction of surgical
bleeding was examined in 101 patients, mainly with abdominal and thyroid
lesions. The study demonstrated complete lack of correlation between the
preoperative evaluation of bleeding risk and the observed surgical bleeding (X2
test P ∼ 0.85).

In a case of cold agglutinin syndrome, treatment with melphalan resulted in
marked decrease of cold agglutinin titre, decrease in concentration of
monoclonal cold agglutinin IgM, and concomitant clinical improvement with
increased cold tolerance. After 27 months of melphalan treatment, the patient
developed acute erythroleukaemia.
