ORAL PRESENTATION: AN EFFECTIVE APPROACH TO ENHANCE NON-ENGLISH MAJOR STUDENTS’ SPEAKING PROFICIENCY
Tập 9 Số 35 - 2019
This paper presents an integrated-skill approach of using oral presentations as an interactive teaching tool innon-English major classrooms. This paper has the following sections: (1) an introduction of the context of teaching and learning English and the factors affecting students’ speaking ability in Vietnam and in several other countries; (2) a presentation of the benefits of integrating oral presentation in the classroom; and (3) suggestions to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers to apply this approach effectively. The researcher applied this approach to two groups of medical students. The result shows that four main factors, which affect students’ speaking ability are a lack of topical knowledge, low selfesteem, limited chances of practice and theoveruse of mother tongue. By giving presentations, students have a higher level of confidence, speak correctly, use more vocabulary, and develop other language skills as well as soft-skills. However, teachers need to instructstudents clearly, reduce pressure on student grades and give effective individual feedback. Furthermore, students need encouragement to create a dynamic learning environment. It is hoped that the pedagogical ideas presented in this paper can help teachers effectively employ oral presentations as a means of improving students’ English-speaking ability.

EVALUATING SURFACE WATER QUALITY AND TESTING FREQUENCY IN TIEN AND HAU RIVERS, AN GIANG PROVINCE, USING 10-YEAR MONITORING DATA
Tập 10 Số 37 - 2020
The study aimed to assess the variation of surface water quality and evaluate the monitoring frequency at threecontinuous monitoring stations on the Tien river (MT1 station) and Hau river (MH1 and MH2 station) over a 10-year period (2009-2018), with a monitoring frequency of 12 times per year (monthly). The water quality variables comprised of temperature (oC), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO, mg/L), total suspended solids (TSS, mg/L), nitrate (N-NO- 3 , mg/L), orthophosphate (P-PO3 4- mg/L), chemical oxygen demand (COD, mg/L), and coliforms (MPN/100 mL). The individual water quality parameters were assessed by comparison with National Technical Regulation on surface water quality (QCVN 08-MT: 2015/BTNMT). Monitoring frequency was evaluatedusing Cluster Analysis (CA). The findings revealed that surface water on both Tien and Hau rivers was perpetually polluted with suspended solids, organic matter, nutrients, and microorganisms. The CA identified that the frequencies of current water monitoring could be reduced from 12 times to 5 times per year, resulting in a 58% reduction in monitoring costs. Future study should focus on evaluating water quality parameters toencompass all water quality characteristics in the Tien and Hau rivers. International collaboration with countries that impact the river before flowing into Vietnam in water management should be enhanced to solve continuing water problems.

GENE CONSERVATION PRACTICE AND PRODUCTION OF OLD HUNGARIAN GOOSE BREEDS
Tập 9 Số 34 - 2019
Hungarian goose production and gene conservation practices have been a tradition in Hungary for several centuries. The old Hungarian geese can only be effectively maintained if the national programs can identify economic uses of the breed. This study aimed to examine the potential use of the Hungarian landrace goose (HL) either as a purebred or crossbred with the Hungarian Upgraded breed (HU). Crossbred offspring were produced by HL ganders and HU layers, as egg production of HL layers is very low. Reproduction traits (egg production, fertility and hatchability) of parent stocks, body weight gain, feed consumption and slaughter values (slaughter loss, breast and thigh weight and proportions) and of offspring were measured. The results showed that fertility in the crossbred geese was insignificant compared to the fertility of HL purebreds, while hatchability of crossbreds was higher than that of purebred HL or HU. HL offspring had significantly lower bodyweight and weight gain, and a higher feed conversion rate than HU. The proportion of valuable meat parts (breast and thigh) was the highest in HU while weight in slaughter loss was also the highest in HU. In terms of body weight, feed conversion rate and slaughter properties, crossbred offspring showed intermediate inheritance. HL is recommended for crossbreeding with HU breeds and their offspring should be reared under free-range keeping conditions.

INITIAL SURVEY OF HEAVY METAL CONCENTRATIONS IN PADDY SOIL AND RICE PLANTS (Oryza sativa L.) NEAR AND FAR FROM OPEN LANDFILL IN SOUTHERN VIET NAM
Tập 10 Số 38 - 2020
The concentrations of heavy metals in soil and rice plants around the landfill area in Dong Thang commune, Co Do District, Can Tho City, Viet Nam needed to be assessed for environmental pollution. Soil samples were collected from four sites (three sites S1, S2, S3 near and one site S4 far away from the landfill area) at soil depths of 0 to 25 and 25 to 50 cm. The rice and soil samples were simultaneously collected at the same locations for analysis of heavy metals. The heavy metals Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Cd were analyzed using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Six heavy metals including Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, and Pb were detected and ranged from 12.3 to 291.0 mg/L for the top soil and 11.2 to 370.0 mg/L for 25 to 50 cm soil layer. However, concentrations of Ni, Cu, and Pb in soil tended to decrease while Mn, Zn and Cr tended to increase with an increase of soil depth near the landfill. A similar tendency of heavy metal concentration with depth was found at S4 except for Cu. The decreasing order of the selected heavy metals concentrations in the two soil layers at near the landfill was Mn>Zn>Ni>Cr>Cu>Pb and these concentrations of heavy metals were within the limits of QCVN 03-MT: 2015/BTNMT and Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME, 2007). The result of the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) in rice plants showed that the selected heavy metals were accumulated more in the root rather than the stem-leaf and grain. Mn was accumulated dominantly in both root and stemleaf, while Zn, Cu, and Pb only accumulated in the root. Thus, result of this study suggests that is essential to collect and treat the heavy metals in the leachate properly to minimize the distribution of heavy metals to the paddy soil environment.
