Mobile communications and health of population: the risk assessment, social and ethical problems
Environmentalist - - 2011
Yury Grigoriev
Today world population lives in a new electromagnetic environment, characterized with (i) around the clock enforcement of chronic exposure of all age and gender groups to a wide range of modulated electromagnetic fields (EMF) from base stations; (ii) daily, repeated from early childhood throughout entire life exposure to EMF RF mobile phone the brain and vestibular receptor apparatus and auditory analyzers, located directly “under the EMF beam” in the inner ear. On the other hand, the world science and epidemiology is missing well-planned and executed research results of prolonged exposure of EMF RF on the brain. International recommendations and domestic guidelines do not include changing conditions of RF EMF on the population: the brain has become a critical organ, and the children entered the risk group. The population continues to actively use the mobile phone. In this situation the problem of assessing the risk of mobile communications has become a social and ethical.

Evaluation of Microbial Communities Colonizing Stone Ballasts at Diesel Depots
Environmentalist - Tập 24 - Trang 187-193 - 2004
Mphekgo P. Maila, Thomas E. Cloete
In this study, we evaluated the heterotrophic microbial communities colonising stone ballasts at diesel depots. The number of bacteria (both total culturable heterotrophic bacteria and hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria) was proportional to the level of hydrocarbon contamination. However, there was no significant difference in the level of total culturable heterotrophs (TCHs) and the hydrocarbon degrading bacteria. Addition of nutrients to the ballast stimulated the biological activity and possibly the removal of hydrocarbons. However, this was only evident in the highly contaminated stone ballasts samples. The biological activity was evaluated using CO2 production. The production of CO2 was higher in nutrient amended treatments in which high numbers of TCHs were present. Characterisation of heterotrophic communities using Biolog revealed differences in the microbial metabolic profiles for the different sites. The results suggest that the heterotrophic microbial communities at different diesel depots are different.
Encouraging tribal women to conserve deciduous biodiversity

Before planning conservation strategies, decision-makers should recognize the cultural and social aspects of the people in and around any ecosystem. This might assist effective management. The needs and problems of the habitat often fail to be taken into consideration before planning forest management. Educating and encouraging the participation of local communities, especially tribal women in conservational activities could play an important role. An attempt was made to educate the tribal women of Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary, Panchmahal District (Western India) about conservation of the local deciduous biodiversity. The paper narrates actions taken in the field for conserving this biodiversity, involving tribal women and children as partners of the protected areas. It might serve as an exemplary case for implementation elsewhere in the world.
Revision of the council directive on the quality of water intended for human consumption
Environmentalist - Tập 19 - Trang 23-26 - 1999
lEROTHEOS Papadopoulos
The current European Directive for the quality of drinking water was originally proposed in 1975 and adopted in 1980. With improved scientific knowledge and a desire to simplify, consolidate and update existing legislation, the commission is currently revising the Directive. Proposed changes include a significant reduction in the value of the lead parameter, which will involve countries such as the UK with considerable expenditure related to the removal of lead pipes and fittings in the water systems. Water quality will in future be measured and expected to comply at the tap. Other proposed changes are also outlined.

Bioaccumulation of metals in black mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) in Cape Town Harbour, South Africa

Heavy metal concentrations in black mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected from Cape Town Harbour were determined using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). EDXRF showed that tissue portions of the mussels contained K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, Si, Sr, Al and Au, while the shell portion contained K, Ca, Fe, Cr, Zn, Si and Sr. In addition to these metals, EDXRF also revealed the presence of Al in the shells of the largest mussels. Highest concentrations of Cu and Zn were recorded in the tissues of the smallest mussels. Due to poorer detection limits of EDXRF, ultra-trace elements (Mn, Pb, As, Hg, V, Cr, Sn, Cd, Ni and Co) were determined in mussels using ICP-MS. The average metal concentrations found in the mussels are as follows; Pb (7.30 ± 0.67), Cd (1.98 ± 0.13), Hg (4.92 ± 0.60), As (6.94 ± 0.04), Sn (2.63 ± 0.13), Ni (1.88 ± 0.05), Cr (3.54 ± 0.05), V (4.17 ± 0.23), Co (0.74 ± 0.01) and Mn (35.20 ± 1.46). ANOVAs, Pearson correlation and principal component analysis (PCA) were employed in data analysis. The order of the abundance of metals in the mussels is Mn > Pb > As > Hg > V > Cr > Sn > Cd > Ni > Co. The average metal concentrations found in the mussels were higher than the permissible Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) limits and other international guidelines.
Europe’s energy deficit: a population dilemma

Europe’s growing energy deficit and destabilising climate may lead the EU and its constituent member states to change its attitude to population size and growth.
The pedagogy of atmospheric issues and the UK Atmospheric Research and Information Centre's Education Programme
Environmentalist - Tập 17 - Trang 263-268 - 1997
Sue Hare, James Longhurst, Kelvin Williams, Joe Buchdahl
Mrs Sue Hare is the education and information services coordinator of the UK Atmospheric Research and Information Centre (ARIC). Professor James Longhurst was recently the director of the ARIC and Joe Buchdahl its global climate change information services coordinator. Professor Longhurst is now head of the Department of Environmental Health and Science, University of the West of England, Frenchay Campus, Coldharbour Lane, Bristol BS16 1QY. Kelvin Williams is a geography consultant and is head of geography at Ysgol y Creuddyn, Penrhyn Bay, Llandudno, Gwynedd LL30 3LB. The pedagogy of atmospheric issues is identified in the context of environmental education in this paper. The UK Atmospheric Research and Information Centre (ARIC) has developed an education programme which has responded to the dynamic issues relating to the atmosphere since the establishment of the ARIC in 1984. The main route for the teaching of atmospheric issues is identified as being through the UK's National Curriculum although public awareness of issues has increased through the media and more recently through government publicity campaigns.
