A detailed examination of the concept of combining ability in relation to diallel crossing systems is made. Eight different analyses aro presented. 'l'hese result from a consideration of four different diallel crossing systems together wit.h two alternative assumptions with regard to the sampling nature of tho experimental material. A numerical example is given.
The relative turgidity technique consists in comparing the initial and turgid water contents, on a percentage basis, of disks punched from leaves, the turgid water content being obtained by floating the disks on water.
There are reports of the storage at O-lOoC of fertilized rabbit (Chang 1947, 1948; Hafez 1965) and sheep ova (Averill 1956; Kardymowicz et al. 1963; Kardy-mowicz, Kardymowicz, and Grochowalski 1966; Kardymowicz, Kardymowicz, and Kremer 1966). However, the storage of fertilized mouse ova in vitro does not appear to have been studied. Wales (1969) found that glycolysis at 37C by cultured bl...... hiện toàn bộ
A study of the photochemical activity of plastids isolated from etiolated bean leaves which had been illuminated for increasing periods was undertaken. Proplastids isolated from etiolated leaves were inactive in the Hill reaction. Photochemical ferricyanide reduction was obtained with plastids isolated from etiolated leaves which had been illuminated for 6 hr. The reduction increased to a ...... hiện toàn bộ

The bloom-forming M. acruginosa contains a peptide hepatotoxin. Injection of algal extracts or of solutions of purified toxin (5 x LDlOo approx.) into mice was shown to cause an increase in liver weight of 63 11 % within 45 min due to an increase in blood content of the organ. At the same time aspartate amino transferase and lactate dehydrogenase increased 50-fold and 20-fold respectivel...... hiện toàn bộ
For wheat plants (cv. Gabo) grown under natural daylight at a temperature of 21/16C, increase in dry weight of the stem exceeded that of the ear for the first 10 days following anthesis. Higher temperatures (27/22C) resulted in a greater rate of grain development, with a corresponding increase in the rate of cell division in the endosperm tissue, and a shortening of the stem growth perio...... hiện toàn bộ
Rates of progress of single populations under selection pressure have been simulated by an automatic electronic computer. Varying intensities of selection and tightness of linkage are compared, showing that linkage produces no qualitative effect on the rates of advance at values greater than 0005, i.e. 05 per cent. recombination.
Sugar levels in the various species of the Saccharum complex suggest an evolutionary increase in sugar content. Under suitable ecological conditions, survival through sucker growth may be dependent on rapid mobilization of stored carbohydrate. Selection pressure for sucrose storage would then oocur if sucrose was more readily remobilized than other storage carbohydrates. It is suggested th...... hiện toàn bộ

The female sex hormone, oestrogen, plays a central role in breast cell proliferation in both the normal and malignant state. It controls transcription from several genes, including that for the progesterone receptor, and in endometrial tissue, via this receptor, it controls the gene for the enzyme oestrogen sulfotransferase. This enzyme may control the level of the oestrogen receptor by su...... hiện toàn bộ
Isozyme phenotypes for eight enzyme systems were used to assess the origins and evolution of P. graminis f. sp. tritici (the wheat stem rust pathogen) in Australia. The results obtained by this approach agreed with pathways postulated on the basis of virulence studies, confirming the suggestion that most of the major changes in the wheat stem rust pathogen flora of Australia have resulted ...... hiện toàn bộ
