The isolation and identification of capsaicin from fruits yielded two
substances. The white crystalline compound, which, after U.V. and I.R.
examination, exhibited the maximum absorption at 206 mµ and the characteristics

Volume regulation in tetraphyllidean larvae

The tetraphyllidean larvae increased in volume, when transferred to dilute
sea-water. However there is a decrease in volume in 50% sea-water. The
conductivity of the medium shows a slight decrease both in 50% and 25%
sea-water, indicating the uptake of salts from the external medium. In 10%
sea-water the conductivity of the medium goes up steadily.

transition metal ions to yield di-, tri-, tetra- and hexanuclear complexes

Some olfactory and gustatory mutants ofDrosophila melanogaster are described.
Theolf mutants are insensitive to the repellent, benzaldehyde or the attractant
ethyl acetate or simultaneously to both. Thegust mutants are unable to taste
quinine or NaCl or sucrose. Electrophysiological tests show that one of the
sugar non-tasters has an altered primary chemoreceptor response to sucrose.
