Trong bối cảnh các cuộc thảo luận về việc cải thiện giáo dục, đào tạo giáo viên, công bằng và đa dạng, còn rất ít công việc được thực hiện để làm cho sư phạm trở thành một lĩnh vực trung tâm của nghiên cứu. Bài viết này cố gắng thách thức những quan niệm về sự giao thoa giữa văn hóa và giảng dạy, chỉ dựa vào các quan điểm vi phân hoặc vĩ mô. Thay vào đó, bài viết nỗ lực xây dựng dựa trên những công trình đã được thực hiện trong cả hai lĩnh vực này và đề xuất một lý thuyết giáo dục phù hợp với văn hóa. Bằng cách đặt ra những câu hỏi về vị trí của nhà nghiên cứu trong nghiên cứu sư phạm, bài viết cố gắng làm rõ khung lý thuyết của tác giả trong mối quan hệ hợp tác và phản tư của nghiên cứu. Các thực hành sư phạm của tám giáo viên tiêu biểu dạy học sinh người Mỹ gốc Phi phục vụ như là "địa điểm" nghiên cứu. Các thực hành và những suy ngẫm về các thực hành đó cung cấp một cách để định nghĩa và công nhận sư phạm phù hợp với văn hóa.
