Một lớp màng phân đoạn, được gọi là “stratum membranosum”, trong mô dưới da của con người thường được mô tả là chỉ có ở vùng bụng dưới phía trước và vùng đáy, và được gọi lần lượt là fascia Scarpa và Colles. Bằng chứng cho sự tồn tại của nó ở những nơi khác trong cơ thể rất thiếu hụt và do đó nghiên cứu hiện tại được thực hiện. Trong tất cả sáu thi thể, một lớp màng sợi liên tục trong fascia nông đã được tìm thấy một cách nhất quán ở tất cả các vùng phẫu tích của cơ thể và cũng được xác nhận bằng siêu âm. Cấu trúc và độ dày của lớp màng này thay đổi theo vùng cơ thể, bề mặt cơ thể và giới tính. Nó dày hơn ở chi dưới so với chi trên, ở mặt sau hơn so với mặt trước của cơ thể, và ở nữ so với nam. Độ dày trung bình của lớp màng này dao động từ 39 đến 189 μm, dày nhất ở chân và mỏng nhất ở mu bàn tay. Lớp màng này được quan sát thấy có hai hoặc thậm chí ba thành phần ở các vùng như vú, lưng, đùi và cánh tay, và đã được quan sát thấy phân nhánh, tạo ra các khoang đặc biệt xung quanh các tĩnh mạch lớn dưới da của chi trên và chi dưới, với các vách ngăn sợi kéo dài để gắn vào thành mạch. Về mặt chức năng, fascia nông màng này có thể đóng vai trò trong việc bảo vệ tính toàn vẹn của da và hỗ trợ cho các cấu trúc dưới da, đặc biệt là tĩnh mạch, bằng cách đảm bảo được sự thông suốt của chúng.
