Sự khai trừ xã hội và các đặc điểm tính cách tối tăm đã được tìm thấy có mối liên hệ với nghiện mạng xã hội. Mặc dù mối quan hệ giữa bộ ba nhân cách tối tăm (tức là, chứng cuồng tự phụ, chủ nghĩa Machiavelli, và tâm lý bệnh) và nghiện mạng xã hội đã được thiết lập rõ ràng, nhưng nghiên cứu về tác động trung gian của chúng còn hạn chế. Trong nghiên cứu hiện tại, chúng tôi đã kiểm tra một mô hình giả thuyết để xem xét tác động trung gian của bộ ba nhân cách tối tăm đối với mối quan hệ giữa sự khai trừ xã hội và nghiện mạng xã hội. Dữ liệu được thu thập từ 497 thanh thiếu niên Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ (M = 14,98, SD = 0,93) thường xuyên sử dụng mạng xã hội. Người tham gia đã hoàn thành các biện pháp về sự khai trừ xã hội, đặc điểm tính cách tối tăm và nghiện mạng xã hội. Kết quả phân tích trung gian cho thấy mối quan hệ đáng kể giữa sự khai trừ xã hội, nghiện mạng xã hội và bộ ba nhân cách tối tăm. Cụ thể, các biến liên quan đến bộ ba nhân cách tối tăm đóng vai trò trung gian trong mối quan hệ giữa sự khai trừ xã hội và nghiện mạng xã hội. Nghiên cứu hiện tại cũng nhấn mạnh tầm quan trọng của các đặc điểm tính cách tối tăm như một yếu tố trung gian trong mối quan hệ giữa sự khai trừ xã hội và nghiện mạng xã hội. Ý nghĩa của những kết quả này mở rộng đến việc phát triển các can thiệp nhằm giảm thiểu nghiện mạng xã hội ở thanh thiếu niên. Cuối cùng, nghiên cứu này cung cấp cái nhìn quý giá về các yếu tố góp phần gây ra tác động tiêu cực của mạng xã hội đối với sức khỏe tâm thần của thanh thiếu niên.
